A judge in Livingston Parish sentenced a Denham Springs woman to 22 years in prison for causing a crash that killed a Watson man in 2016, said Matthew Belser, an assistant district attorney for the 21st Judicial District. Ad hoc Judge Edward "Jimmy" Gaidry imposed the lengthy sentence on Ashley Covington, 38, after hearing testimony Monday from the widow of 43-year-old Brian Broom, who died after the crash near Live Oak High School in Watson, Belser said. He said the prison sentence will be followed by an eight-year suspended sentence and three years on probation.

Belser said Covington tested positive after the crash for hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Broom, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered severe injuries, State Police said. He was transported to Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge, where he died.

Covington pleaded no contest on May 2 to vehicular homicide under the influence of controlled dangerous substances, according to the 21st Judicial District Attorney's Office.

Belser said the judge's sentence is longer than what is normally seen for this crime. He said it took into account a prior conviction Covington had for first-degree vehicular negligent injury and addiction problems.

Man, I don’t know about this one. Not that I have a whole lot of sympathy for her, but dudes that kill multiple people oftentimes get way less than this. I’m not sure what the answer is, but the difference in punishments for the same crimes can’t be so extreme based solely on the arbitrariness of which judge you happen to pull. Prayers to Mr. Broom’s family though.

People who kill multiple individuals don’t often get less than 22 years calculated as non-violent. She will be eligible for good time and parole at less than half that time. There’s a big difference in how 22 years on a manslaughter, for example, is calculated than 22 years on vehicular homicide.

Well had he been wearing a seat belt he'd probably be alive.
He is equally to blame.
