Most powerful storms will develop tall cloud tops. Think of a super cell storm in the spring. Inflow wind into the storm, feeds it with moisture and heat. That inflow creates updrafts that build the height of the storm. It doesn't matter if that storm is a hurricane or a super cell, they work the same. It shows that the environment that they are in is conducive to storm development and growth.
You can also have those cloud tops collapse if conditions weaken and can no longer support the storms. You see this in super cells when a downburst happens and high winds rush towards the ground and outward from the base of the storm.

HMON shifted 10 miles east to a West Vermilion Bay landfall. Next point of reference is New Roads/West Feliciana for eye.
