I wish it had been discussed more and in the open when my dad was as younger. Maybe then he would have been open to therapy and maybe it would have helped.

But when you are old you tend to be very set in your ways. Anything we tried with him got a “that ain’t gonna help” response. Except for meds. He was fine taking those. But we could never get him to grasp that you can’t just take a pill for it and it magically goes away. You gotta do the work as well to feel better.

He was from a generation that didn’t put emphasis on mental health. It wasn’t talked about in the open. It was the family “dirty secret”.

It is my wholly unproven scientific theory that panic attacks are a subconscious response to urban and suburban overcrowding. I submit that taking a person suffering from panic attacks to the open country for a couple of weeks will cure them. If they return when normal life resumes , I would just recommend a permanent move to the quieter life.

We weren't made to be or feel constricted.

But “anxiety” seems to have become some insurmountable obstacle to every day life for a lot of people.

40 years ago people used to smoke cigarettes regularly, it was acceptable inside almost any home or venue.
Not suggesting nicotine is better than anxiety, just suggesting the habit probably helped mask a lot of low level social fears and disorders.
Might even be the reason doctors didn't discourage it back in the day.

In my opinion, there’s two main causes: our straying from God, and our straying from Nature.

The world is a brutal place, and even if you don’t believe in God, you can recognize that the Bible is thousands of years of accumulated wisdom and knowledge of dealing with that brutal world.

We’ve been hardwired over thousands and thousands of years to survive and live in nature. In the last couple hundred years, and especially the last handful, we’ve become disjointed with nature. The electronic, artificial world has replaced the natural world and we’re not wired to handle that.

We’re probably more anxious today than our ancestors who had to struggle for survival on a daily basis.

At any give time up to 30% of Americans are experiencing mental issues. Anxiety and depression are two of the most common conditions, and also two of the most treatable.

We're also bombarded via electronic communications with non-stop bad, or even apocalyptic, news.

It can be very real and debilitating, it can also be a crutch. Determining the difference has to be almost impossible except to the individual experiencing it.
