Imagine everything is going great in life, you're sitting on the couch relaxing watching tv and in an instant it feels like you can't breath and you're having a heart attack. It's real and terrifying for some people.

Before COVID my dad would insist on going to the ER at least once every couple months cause he felt like “something was really wrong”. Each time the same thing…they couldn’t find anything wrong and maybe gave him a dose of something to calm him down. No matter how many times I would I try to tell him the ER can’t fix his anxiety he would still insist on going.

One good thing about COViD is I was able to use that to convince him to not go to the ER. They wouldn’t allow any of us to be there with him and he was terrified of getting COVID (rightfully so as he had numerous other medical issues on top of his mental illness).

When you’re right, you’re right. I heard about that too. I guess that was the equivalent of crippling anxiety now that I think about it.

No doubt.

Too many people are only making it worse by not taking care of themselves

At any give time up to 30% of Americans are experiencing mental issues. Anxiety and depression are two of the most common conditions, and also two of the most treatable.

The brain is a delicate organ and there are thousands of things that can affect it negatively. You never know what battles are going on in another person’s head.

People had it in the past. Look at Howard Hughes. They called it “the vapors” or “nervous breakdown.” If you were rich, you were eccentric, and if you were poor you were a hermit or a drunk or had shell shock or some other term. I do agree that more people today have mild anxiety than in the past. I blame our lifestyle.

Everybody has anxiety at some level, at some time. There are mental exercises that decrease the level of anxiety, like:

1. Ask yourself about the source of the anxiety. Many times it’s actually nothing, and your head just decided it was time to worry.
2. Ask yourself what the worst case outcome of the anxiety is. Most times you’ll realize the worst case is a nothingburger.
3. Prayer and/or meditation.

I found out from others on my dad’s side that there was a history of them being “worriers”.

So that was what they called those with anxiety back then. Worrywarts, worriers, etc.

Dealing with my father has made me realize my tendency to be anxious. However, unlike my dad I see how things can really help alleviate anxiety before it gets out of hand (therapy, exercise, etc).

He has made me realize in general just how important it is to take care of yourself now so you hopefully don’t have these issues when you are elderly

I suffer from severe anxiety daily. It’s been this way for a few years now. A good portion of my anxiety comes from my Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, but there are other issues that can cause anxiety in a heartbeat.

I take several medications for anxiety and depression, and I truly feel it takes the edge off for me. The anxiety is still there, but it numbs it somewhat, to where I don’t feel overwhelmed. I may have moments of intense anxiety throughout the day at random times, but the medicine helps me to stay in control and not let it dictate my day. Therapy has also been a great tool in providing strategies to deal with anxiety and obsessive thoughts.

You know, I guess I’ve heard that too. Maybe it seems like there is more of it because it is more out in the open and is called what it is.

I’m still concerned that our world seems to undervalue resilience.
