It is actually called “locked in syndrome” and can be the result of a accident, or health issue like a stroke. Those that have recovered from it described being totally awake and aware to all things going on, but unable to communicate to anyone. In one case the person was able to blink, and after his caretakers figured out he was communicating, he dictated a book by blinking.

I mean theoretically a person in this situation could just get a slip and then can buy a pill and administer it to themselves if the means of transmission existed.

It seems you are having trouble grasping that aspect. Its just a test of if a person is mentally capable of making such a decision - anything that mental capability is confirmed is a personal choice

It is also a book, never really listened to Metallica. My guess is that their video would have been a nod to that book.

Johnny Got His Gun another poster said it was called.

ETA: written in 1938 per Google

Im curious about people who oppose death with dignity where it would be allowed for people of sound mind, etc. Why cant a person decide that they don't want to fight to the very end and instead opt to go out in peace when they see fit. Instead of spending all that money in the final months (almost seems like this benefits the medical lobby and not individuals), they can pass it on to their loved ones.

The fight against death is a losing battle - in history and in literature/storytelling we celebrate people who choose their final stand on their own ground - people should be allowed to make that same decision.

I seems like fthe extreme fear of death and aversion to discussing our own fatality that is the cause of the aversion to death with dignity. It seems odd that we are expected to fight to the bitter end against the inevitable. This fight is likely for the benefit of our family and loved ones - and i question whether it is even a benefit.

Im sitting up with my dog hoping to get him in to be put down tomorrow and it has me thinking on why i wouldn't be allowed to make this decision for myself.

Putting a dog down is one of the worst things I have had to do. I’m also sitting up with my dog after deciding to not to put her down today. She’s a Great Dane and after helping her around with a towel to walk and use the bathroom for the last month or two I’m just tired. I know it’s time but she’s still eating and enjoys going and laying in the yard but I have to help her get there.

Death with dignity statutes exist in California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. It’s legal in Montana even without statute. So there are options and you can bet more states will be added.

I hear you, and best luck to the old girl. My GSD doesn't want to go outside and watch the cats, which is a big sign for him lol - he has eaten some with an appetite stimulant the last few days and I was hoping that would perk him up (he seemed almost fine 10 days ago), but not go on that. I already had an appointment for Monday, but hoping to take care of it tomorrow as I can tell he is done.

I’m not advocating for suicide, but how is this different from the popular liberal chant “my body, my choice?” Snuffing out a beating heart is killing, no matter who has the bloody hands.

If you want to die, just go walk the downtown streets of any large liberal city.

This is how the California law is. You have to request it multiple times, then still have the ability to administer the cocktail to yourself. My aunt did this two years ago. She had ALS and the prison walls were closing fast. She lived in constant fear of suffocation, still of sound mind.

think human consciousness, is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware, nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself, we are creatures that should not exist by natural law. We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self; an accretion of sensory, experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody is nobody. Maybe the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight - brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal."

Well cali gets a few things right it seems, in addition to a lot of wrong.

I wonder if someone can like fly to cali to have that option or if you have to be a resident or something.

so you make sweeping generalizations from one person? That has nothing to do with what OP was talking about btw

isn't hospice really just that? To make you comfortable as you go?
