I’m with you OP. I watched my grandfather suffering and bedridden for years. It was in humane. I want the ability to check out of this life when I choose.
Eight states and Washington, D.C., have death with dignity statutes:
California (End of Life Option Act; approved in 2015, in effect from 2016)
Colorado (End of Life Options Act; 2016)
District of Columbia (D.C. Death with Dignity Act; 2016/2017)
Hawai‘i (Our Care, Our Choice Act; 2018/2019)
Maine (Death with Dignity Act; 2019)
New Jersey (Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act; 2019)
Oregon (Death with Dignity Act; 1994/1997)
Vermont (Patient Choice and Control at the End of Life Act; 2013)
Washington (Death with Dignity Act; 2008)

My dad had a massive stroke. The doctors said that if they didn't remove part of his skull to relieve pressure he would die. I asked the doctors what kind of life would he have if he survived the surgery. They were unsure of the type of life. Well he was bed ridden for 3 years. His muscles had atrophied and anytime he was moved he would scream out in pain. He was basically curled in a fetal position for 3 years. You can imagine all of the other demoralizing things that went along with this situation. I have told my family if anything like this happens to me.. Just let me die..

Luckily I was young enough to make a recovery but to exist like that on a daily basis is no way to live and I fully understand why someone would decide not to do it anymore. Until you've spent your second night that week crying yourself to sleep because you've shite yourself and you're too weak to clean it up or alert a nurse well... maybe don't judge others for taking "the easy way out".

I am in this camp. I am finding myself crying more and more each day. Fighting this dam ALS is real bad. Was walking with a walker back in July. By the end of July, I couldn't walk anymore. I am dealing with CIDP which keeps me in a shite load of pain. Between not able to breath when laying down and unable to even move my body in bed along with unreal pain, I gave up sleeping in a bed. We did buy a complete adjustable bed, but that became to hard to use. Now to use the bathroom, that sucks. Very painful on the back and I have to call out for help to pull up my pants which now is just gym shorts.
Will I take the easy way out? That runs thru my mine all the time, but I will not. Reason, my son did and those left behind suffer for the rest of their life's.
