Dear Facebook: What Grinds My Gears, Memorial Day Edition

I have the radio on at work and a station promo came on saying "Make your Memorial Day weekend more awesome! Led Zeppelin all weekend!" Well, is Memorial Day supposed to be awesome? It seems that the true solemn nature of Memorial Day is lost. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be blasted with "Memorial Day Mattress Sale!" and "Memorial Day Mega Blowout Savings!" It seems very disrespectful.
Capitalism is great, but is Memorial Day something to be exploited? I can see it happening for Veteran's Day, because the veterans are still with us. That is something worth a happy celebration.
During my years in Australia, I noticed that the two major military holidays - Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day - were always treated in a solemn and respectful manner. It is the one thing I think Australia is better at than the United States.
Okay, roast me!

Remember the 9/11 Mattress Sale that someone did in Texas?
At the end of the commercial 2 guys fell into a "tower" of mattresses.

We are a stupid country filled with a bunch of ignorant people. Once you accept that fact, it makes not getting bent out of shape over things like this easier. I'd venture a guess that 75% of this country doesn't know what Memorial Day's true intention is.

Thanks for reminding me. I need a new mattress.

Hmmm Memorial Day and Veterans Day.....
One is not like the other. Wonder what it could be?
You give workers a day off and it's going to be a celebration. And people buy shite when happy.
The solution would be to give us off a day for Vets Day and Not Memorial Day.

I missed that one.
Kind of glad I did.

It's a holiday off of work, people are going to enjoy it and have fun. Would you rather people sulk quietly in their homes and put on some old war docs instead?

All true, but it has the bad luck of falling at the end of school and start of nice weather in most of the country. It's turned into a national early summer holiday.

You know America doesn't GAS when it comes to patriotism. Not at its core. Well, we post memes and facebook borders but after that, we gorge on food, get drunk and drive, swim in American flag bikinis, pop Chinese black cats and beat our women.

I don't expect people to sit in their homes all day sulking. Enjoying a nice day with family is an excellent way to honor the fallen. People can attend special church services, or memorial services at a national cemetery. Hell, go shopping all day if you want.
It's the over-the-top marketing that is distasteful to me.

I had to look that one up. Texas mattress store closes after 9/11 'Twin Tower sale' commercial sparks threats (Fox News)
Shitty youtube video of the commercial

This.
People can enjoy the start of their summer and also be patriotic and remember the reason for the holiday.
We usually head to the beach every year for this holiday. I fly my American flag at home that weekend and say an extra prayer in church on that Sunday.
And damn right I'm going to grill meat and drink some beers on Memorial Day.

I don't know, partying to celebrate memorial day is a pretty american thing to do. I'll allow it.

Memorial Day is a time marker for the beginning of summer.

Nothing wrong with that.
Anyway, I think we got the days backwards anyway. November 11, our Veteran's Day, is Armistice/Remembrance Day to a large chunk of the remaining English-speaking world. That is their Memorial Day. Maybe we should make November 11 Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day in May.

A. Its the official "Summer is here" weekend. That will always be a celebration of sorts.
B. When I die, I want my funeral/wake to be a happy celebration of my life. I bet a lot of fallen service men and women would feel the same.
But I get your point.

So go back to the down under. Is it true that water drains counter clockwise there?
