They had an extra $1,000 in fees and I then negotiated $1,000 more off of the 2nd number they brought me - they didn’t take it off but I got car for $27,000. The sticker was $29,500. I usually get all that taken off by threatening to walk but I was sick and didn’t fell like fight it - here’s my final offer $27,000 take or leave it. 30 minutes and I done.

Fees are OOC.

And sales guys straight-up lie.

What's your OTD price?

"XXX"

Then I'm ready to buy and there's another $750 in fees.
"Errybody pays dat- cant do nuttin"

Take it off the price, or I'm out.

You'd think I was kicking his dog, they cry so effin' hard.

It ought to be on sticker price - everything - it’s deceptive.

Back in the day, it was like $100, so not big deal.

Then they figured out they could backdoor you, so they did, now people are wising up.

Louisiana has long been the worst for this.
Dealers here used to steal money with the "ad valorum tax" fee scam.

I suppose the point is that they're advertising one price, then adding an additional $X amount on when you get to the dealership pissing people off.

The vehicles that say "no added dealer fees" indicates they're not baiting buyer only to waste their time when they get to the dealership.

TTL I don't mind paying at the dealership, since you're going to have to pay that regardless. We don't pay other fees though.

It's just basic misdirection that most people would consider false advertising.

Allows their cars to seem cheaper in ads or internet searches to get you to the lot and then adds a level of confusion to negotiation they can take advantage of.

This is true. I have been burnt in the past. Specifically asked if the price posted was the end price, was told yes. Got there and sure enough, they added a low jack system.

Just bought the wife (NO PICS) a new car. I can't tell you how many places i was ready to purchase from and we would get down the buyers order and I would ask about this fee that fee. Most wouldn't budge on it. I Just say to the salesman thanks i am out and move to the next one. finally bought one at a dealer that didn't add that shite.

max doc fee of $425 in louisiana. shitty but most dealers will charge it. some states have unlimited fees (looking at you, florida)

When I was looking for a truck up here in N LA, Yokem Toyota had a 5K market adjustment, $500 dealer fee and a 2k delivery charge. Like why would a buyer be responsible for a random truck that wasn't custom built by the buyer be charged for them to have a truck delivered to their lot. It's not my responsibility for yall to have trucks on the lot. They didn't have any of those charges at John Harvey in Bossier. Almost an 8K difference in the exact same truck. Some of these dealers are just scum.

If this was indeed in Louisiana, that is illegal. Dealer doc fee is capped by statute at $425

It is a “just because” made up number. It helps them make simple math confusing.

In theory the dealership is the only one that knows its cost basis. Historically the used products is where they made the bulk of the money.

Probably was $425 then. But knowing that dealership it certainly wouldn't surprise me if they were charging more than what was allowed. Hell the market adjustments were frowned upon by Toyota but dealerships were doing it just because they could.

I bought a Tacoma in NC and they had a $899 doc fee and $1800 add on for paint protection etc. the doc fee is non negotiable but I found they same truck at another dealer and I told them I was leaving to buy it there since they did not have the extra $1800 add on. They took it off…..

And yes, even the power sports dealerships are doing it now too.

Went with my son to look at a couple used Tacoma’s in FWB. First one was at a Dodge dealership but had come from up North somewhere and had a badly rusted frame. Then went to the Toyota dealership there. Looked at a couple trucks and found one he wanted to buy. Asked for a buyers order as he had a pre approval from his credit union.

They had a $1250 or so service and reconditioning fee. Asked what that was, they said it was where they brought oil changes etc up to date (don’t think they had) and detailed the truck (if they’d done this they’d done it poorly). Told them that was part of their cost in the vehicle and not our responsibility to pay for that. They said they remove it but just added it back again in a different place.

I can’t imagine how they slip shite like that by people with a functioning brain but they must find plenty of them. I was floored at how slimy the whole thing seemed.

If you have to lie to people to do your job you are not a salesman. You are a criminal and a piece of shite.

Was casually looking for a SxS and found one listed in Dallas for 3 or 4k cheaper than any closer dealer. Basically back to prices before Covid shortages.

Called them for an out the door price and what do you know $3000 in dealer fees.

Promptly hung up. Basically false advertising to get you to call.

But people forget there is no minimum fee and it is certainly not mandated by any state. Why people accept this with cars is absurd.

In what other business does the customer pay separately for the seller's necessary paperwork to run their business? If the dealer doesn't fill out the paperwork to sell the car, then there's no sale. Expecting the customer to pay for 'paperwork' the dealer has to complete anyway is bogus and we wouldn't accept this in any other modern transaction.

I don't pay a document fee or a delivery fee when I buy milk at the store or lumber at Home Depot, but every store has the milk & lumber delivered and documents the transaction with a receipt. If Walmart charged you $0.25 delivery fee and $0.15 receipt fee on a $6 gallon of milk, you'd never shop there again.
