My drinking experiences are like many on here, I’m not a daily drinker like my father was, nor do I really have a craving for alcohol. My issue is when I get started I’m hard up to stop. More often than not there are no consequences or problems but lately I find my self making apologies, wether big or small. The two to three hours of having a good time aren’t worth the hurt and embarrassment that those hours can turn into. I greatly respect all of you on here for sharing your experiences and struggles and hope we all find the confidence and self worth to get to where we need to be.

the thought of being stone cold sober for the rest of my life is scary.
A sober life is full of joy and excitement. You can be present for the people that love you, you can remember and be fully aware of life's best. You make a lot less apologies for being an arse. You talk to less policemen. Going through life inebriated is not a desirable scenario. But, to each his own.

Apparently moderation is a foreign concept to you.

You can positively do it!! Don’t look one day last the day you are in, period. Take it one day at a time. I will be praying for you and very best of luck. You should be proud of yourself!

Hang in there. I went totally dry Jan 1-July 4 2017 and then April 1-Nov 3, 2018. Since then I'd let it creep back in.
I'm wrapping up my first full month of 2019 100% back on the wagon, and it's just so much better. While it's a minute-by-minute battle, know that when you hit a month you'll be a truly new person. It's crazy how much your nerves and senses are dulled by alcohol.
Come back to this thread often, because it helps to talk, even w "strangers."

Being alone is so painful. I wonder if it’s my fault I am alone; is it a product of who I am and do I have control over who I am?
I sit here in absolute silence and my heart aches in this solitude and loneliness. Wasn’t I supposed to have warmth, light, laughter and fellowship to fill these walls? Instead, an aching endless silence.

Take Donald Trump for example. He doesn't drink and look at him now as our billionaire POTUS.
Jesus Christ, dude.
Good luck, OP. We're pulling for you.

I can drink in moderation, but even that has started feeling like crap. Something happened to my brain in my 40s, and it just isn't enjoyable usually. I've found it more insidious the past few years. It has become a misfit in my life.

Did any of you have end relationships or was everyone understanding and supportive? I’m stopping as well and this will be the only thing that I’d have a difficult time handling.
My wife (girlfriend at the time) was very supportive. I couldn't have done it without her; wouldn’t have wanted to.
If you’re romantically involved with someone, give it some time. Your heart will tell you if it’s real or based on substances alone.
Friends are a different story. I had people in my life, mainly neighbors, in which alcohol was our common love. I didn’t really hang out with them after. No need to as we no longer had a lot in common. My friends from years are still there and I enjoy our relationships more now than I ever have.
Just surround yourself with people who share your same values: what you hold valuable.
And if you decide an AA or Celebrate Recovery route.. you’ll have even more best friends for life.

I joined AA a little over 7 months ago - it's been a lifechanging experience. I know theres a stigma to it but I've fallen in love with it. My sponsor is a great dude who went through similar shite that I've gone through and has given me great advice along the way. He is going to be a main speaker at the convention in Detroit next summer and I'm making plans to go. If you're serious about quitting and want to be in the company of other people who have quit that can help you along the way, don't hesitate to call up the local AA club to find a meeting.

People said going to AA was like brainwashing.
Well my brain was filthy and nasty, it needed a good washing and it got one. Been that way 7 years now. Life is freaking awesome again.

I hope I get to relate to this, it’s the time of year that I’d look forward to the most of hanging out with friends and family during LSU and Saints weekends. It’s time I grow a pair and face reality that I might lose some close people, I truly hope not.
