Same for me. I don’t have the “off switch” that normal drinkers have.

I've enjoyed learning about the biology of the brain and how alcohol affects it. Some people are like us and don't have the ability to turn it off like you said. Naltrexone and medications like it that block the receptors in the brain from receiving the endorphins that alcohol releases are game changers.

Good luck man, got a lot of people rooting for you, even if you don’t know it. I’m rooting for you.

It was more of a point that successful people can also be non drinkers regardless of who they are, where they work and what side of the aisle they are on.

It's also a point that choosing to not drink is a good example of confidence, discipline and a sense of priority on their own health and that's a feature, not a bug, successful people have in how they go about their lives.

That's great. You've realized you don't have the "off switch" and that's a large part of the battle.

Just by saying this you’ve accomplished more than half of the battle. Most people think “nah.. I’m fine... it only affects me.. I’m good.. I can stop anytime I want to.. etc”

When you’re ready go for it. You’ll never have to battle it alone. You’ll be surrounded by tons of people that think like you and make life more worthwhile.

Yeah, that's like 70 standard drinks a week, just on the night cap. Not considering any social drinks or special occasions.

The OP was heading towards liver failure in a hurry.

Stopped Drinking Aug 20th. Same thing. No such thing as one or 2. Been the best decision of my life. If you are struggling there are some great AA Meetings around town to go to. If you are think about it, or struggling with a certain aspect, odds are you will hear how many have faced those situations and over come them.

Keep pushing bro

I've spend my whole life telling myself I can control it. Lied about my alcohol intake on every yearly physical form.

Finally admitted everything to my doctor. It was like a load off of my shoulders. Suggest you do the same. It's a start and the Acamprosate is a godsend.

Keep on keeping on. Sobriety is awesome. I want to kick my own arse daily for all the years of hiding in a bottle.
Physically and mentally a MAJOR difference.
Also you will find peace in your soul and your family will also.

I saw a documentary on Amazon Prime called One Little Pill where they use the Sinclair Method. Basically, they take a Naltrexone pill 45 minutes to an hour before they drink and can stop after a few cocktails because the reward receptors are blocked. The desire to get hammered is gone. They drink normally. And these are people that have been in and out of rehab, AA, and other methods but couldn’t stay sober. Why this isn’t more readily available or advertised on TV is beyond me. Must be the rehab industrial complex....

ETA Good luck on your decision to stop drinking. It’s got to be a lot tougher than drugs because it’s glamorized, advertised, and socially acceptable (and encouraged), and readily available everywhere you look.

I wish you much success. Alcohol abuse is a horrible condition for the person and for his family. Keep on keeping on.
