Alcoholics have a different chemistry that does not allow them to process alcohol the way other people do. It's not a matter of self control -- the substance will always win as long as any amount of it is going into their system. That shite on TV is going to kill a lot of people because that is just what an addict wants to hear.

what's your doctor's name? a specialist or just a primary care physician?

I don’t have the “off switch” that normal drinkers have.

This describes me to a tee. If I stop at 2 drinks, I'm golden. Get me to #3 and I don't have the ability to stop.

Yeah, that's like 70 standard drinks a week, just on the night cap. Not considering any social drinks or special occasions.

The OP was heading towards liver failure in a hurry.

And to the OP I'm not passing judgement. I was at ~25 drinks a week myself. After having high liver enzymes and not being able to trust a fart for a year (I thought it was just part of getting older) I've cut way back.

Yea, the annual physical form the doctor has me fill out asks how many drinks/day and how many drinks/week.

I finally told the truth after 30 years of lies.

I'm sure my liver is damaged to some extent..

If you hadn't got to the point where you had jaundice and/or bad bilirubin levels, the liver can recover and heal itself a lot of times (I'm no expert, so I won't say all the time).

not being able to trust a fart
The worst thing about this time of year. College football, NFL, MLB playoffs...too many reasons to plop down on the sofa at night and drink a 6 pack watching sports 4-5 days a week = frequent beer shits.

seen this with smokers. a good friend of mine is from indonesia and his culture was to smoke a pack a day.

he quit cold turkey at like 37 years old and took up cycling and his lungs are virtually healed now.

And the Holidays. Be ready for friends and family to say “Just stop after a few” or “Just drink responsibly.” That’s like saying, “Just do a couple of lines and put it down.” How ridiculous is that? Not trying to scare you but since alcohol is so socially acceptable, unless you’re pregnant or on antibiotics, no one wants to hear that because it makes them look at their own drinking habits. Not always, but it happens.

The body is fairly resistant. Unless you have heart damage it can recover fairly well.
