The models for hospitalization do not appear to be holding elsewhere. Has the State of Louisiana released these numbers? If not, will they?

I haven't seen those numbers anywhere. For any state.

Just saw this on twitter

quote:

Update: 271 of Louisiana's 1,388 confirmed coronavirus patients, or about 20%, are currently hospitalized.

94 of them require ventilation.

No. We are reliant on accounts from nurses and respitory therapists to be published in news articles.

State by state models
Show total numbers of hospital beds by state and the expected demand on said hospitals based on each state’s approach to the virus.

The figure for Alabama they released yesterday was 7% of confirmed cases hospitalized.

So 7% are critical.

Kentucky is fairly close to a shelter in place, he’s just not calling it that.

Alabama should be okay. New Orleans is a mini-epicenter and surrounding states seem to have gotten hit by spread/visitors to Mardi Gras, etc.

That website claims that 68,000 people will die in LA and that 100,000 will be hospitalized in 2 weeks.

State by state models

According to that model, here are the expected hospitalizations for LA on 3/23 depending on type of action

Do nothing: 1,351
Social Distancing: 966
Shelter in Place: 739

That's FAR from the official number of 271.

I remember now. I knew I had seen a tweet about it somewhere, but couldn't even remember the state. Too much shite to look at.

This is pretty standard. 20% hospitalization at least. Usually it’s around 5% requiring ventilators but I’m not surprised it’s higher here where people are sicker and fatter.

It's very hard to predict, and I think that the people attempting to scare people with worst case scenario numbers are doing more harm than good.

That being said, what is CLEAR from the responses from other countries is that hesitating to act in the beginning is a fatal mistake. This is something you have to get ahead of and relax on the back end.

That's the inherent problem with trying to gauge something against a theoretical model. We have no idea if the actual is way better than the estimated, or if the estimated was total bullshite to begin with and we are actually still in bad shape.

One of the New Orleans area health systems sent an email this morning stating their system has over 275 confirmed or highly suspected cases currently admitted in their hospitals. So I think that 271 for the whole state is very under reported.
