Excellent episode. Should be required listening with a post-test to be able to post a political opinion on the OT.

quote:

“You keep using this word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.” — The Princess Bride

"Political parties exist to secure responsible government and to execute the will of the people. From these great tasks both of the old parties have turned aside. Instead of instruments to promote the general welfare, they have become the tools of corrupt interests which use them impartially to serve their selfish purposes. Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government, owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day." — Theodore Roosevelt

Dan Carlin is the undisputed king of historical podcasting, and one of my favorite human beings. Today we sit down to chat about the differences between Nazism and Socialism, the right-wing vs. left-wing paradigm, our favorite past U.S. presidents, the feeling you have when witnessing slow moving historical catastrophes, and much more.

You think Dan Carlin is the “best expert” on American political parties ? Or you just think he’s an entertaining podcaster with an interesting take on history ?

Edit- about to listen. Enjoy Dan Carlin- he’s very talented.

From my perspective, yes. Since he considers himself and outsider and freely discusses his belief in the futility of the left/right paradigm in this episode specifically.

I’m about to get on the mower so I am gonna give it a chance.

Dan’s politics are on the left so I will listen with trepidation.

He actually addresses that in this show when he talks about how past Republicans would be viewed as leftist by current day Republicans. It's amazing how far right this country has shifted.

I really liked the idea in this show that he said a professor of his put forth. He said the idea of identity would better be viewed as a circle instead of a straight line where the far right and far left actually meet.

You fart?

Simple article but sort of summarizes the thought

In other words, on the less significant societal issues, society has gone left. In my opinion, on the more important issues, society (via politics) has gone decidedly right.

When a poster can't understand that political post belong on the political board there's not much you can do to help them.

It's funny how I only hear this statement from the left.

It's pretty easy to identify those that don't bother to read source material and just jump in blindly.
