I don't own one either. I have a couple of sport coats and matching pants that I've worn to funerals. I wouldn't wear a suit to a wedding, unless I was in the wedding party then I would wear a tux. I have no need for a suit and some $400 shoes.

i own 4 pairs, didn't pay full price for any of them.
they're not what they used to be (and are now very inferior to Aldens), but not bad when they're had on sale

I can't imagine how any adult man wouldn't own a suit. I would feel so underdressed if I went to a formal wedding without one. This board never ceases to amaze me.

Had the same experience. I have a pair of AE that I bought many years ago that still look great, had them resoled and refinished a couple times and it was worth it. the last pair I bought were no where near the same quality.

I don't live in the 'Camelot' circle so I don't have the need. I'm nearly 50 now and the last suit I had dry rotted in the closet over 25 years ago.

This isn't true at all. Cole Haan makes comfortable as frick shoes, but they're built cheaply and it shows.

Have a pair from 4 years ago and one from a year ago. Both holding up fine.....

The problem is there is very little alternative to some of the stuff AE makes.
Alden is a lot harder to get and 2x or 3x more expensive in many instances. Stuff like To Boot is often too euro-themed for American business casual tastes.
Best bet is if you get more "cut out the middleman" small operations popping up, but they're not going to be too focused on conservative dress when they do arise. Stuff like Oak Street or Rancourt are good, but they trend more casual.

To their credit they make really shitty to half-decent shoes, but the half decent shoes aren't in the ballpark of AE as far as build quality (or at least the older AE shoes).
With the exception of some one off stuff or association with other makers, you're not going to find Horween leather on Cole Haan shoes.

No offense but I strongly disagree. Brands like Bruno Magli, Mezlan and Magnanni make an incredible shoe and so many of their shoes in a line cost the same as AE. Better quality, better fit and better feel. Sure, they are imports and sound faggy but for a dress shoe, go outside of CH and AE for the same price.

Maybe some people don’t like the lower profile European lasts. The companies you listed aren’t really AE competitors. Alden is really the only other company offering traditional American lasts with Goodyear welts in an array of full grain and shell.

I referenced that when I was talking about To Boot (or Magli, Mezlan, etc.).
That stuff is all too euro-centric for a lot of American trad tastes, which is what AE excels at. You're not going to find a beefroll penny from Mezlan, because it's an American shoe and Mezlan is a "Spanish" brand.

The CH's are very comfortable, I have a pair. But they have paper welts. Cobbler showed me one he has broken down.
However, I have wondered, if you look on CH's and J&M's website, they have more expensive shoes that are hand-crafted, from overseas, etc. Are those pretty well made as AE and Alden?

Which aren't? Because all but a select handful of their shoes are bonwelted and are crap. Their very small selection of goodyear welted shoes (the "Made in England" line) are made by Loake, but don't even use the same quality leather as Loake's lowest end offerings. There is no Cole Haan shoe which is comparable to the Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue, Strand, or anything on AE's major lasts.
I haven't bought AE in 4-5 years, but come on. Cole Haan? Not close.

It depends on the shoe, and you can usually find someone who has broken them down and reviewed them. The majority of the time, you'll see Loake, C&J, or others construct a shoe with leathers that Cole Haan selects. So while it's a big improvement over the ordinary line (after all, a cobbler can resole it easily), you aren't getting the level of product seen in even the Loake 1880 line (one of the best values, along with Meermin) IMO.
