Apparently.
I don't understand why it has to be acceptable. Everyone does it is not a valid excuse. If you can't handle the situation properly, then you failed at your job and should find a new one. Instead we just excuse it away so we can keep hiring unqualified folks at $35k/year.

Look, if you can somehow change thousands of years of human psychological evolution, then by all means, have at it.

Including special pay, DPD rookies make close to $60k.
Also, you're an idiot.

Maybe they should have been paying closer attention to him instead of making jokes. "Protect and Serve" is the mandate after all, right?

There is a difference between shop talk behind closed doors and the kind of callous behavior on display while being recorded. If you watch that video and think, man, all of these guys are mentally capable of handling the nuanced situations in which officers often find themselves, I don't know what to tell you.

Gallows humor is a real thing in many professions. From what I watched though, I don't think that situation for the cops was all that stressful to justify the callous nature of their comments and laughter. That crossed a line, IMO.
But everyone's line in that regard is probably different.

You believe they knew he was dying and were laughing about it? Really? Did you watch the video? They thought he had just passed out until the very end when the medic says he's dead.

You'd think they might get better folks in that case.

I bet this exact situation happens dozens of times a week and no one dies as a result. I can't blame them for being a bit callous, but I'm not sure they should be charged with a crime. I really do feel for the family and I understand why they would be upset after seeing that footage. Hopefully this will be a teaching tool for the DPD.

I never said they knew he was dying. Hell, they fact that they had no clue is a bit distressing.

No, it's a marketing slogan. Supreme court ruled they have no obligation to actually protect and serve anyone.

I watched the video - I don't see anything that amounts to a crime either.
However, I obviously disagree with you about the overall behavior.

They really have a lot of empathy for someone they know is mentally ill. fricking psychopaths

Have you ever seen video of combat? There's plenty of times that guys joke also, not necessarily during actual combat but immediately after absolutely. Operating rooms? Doctor's making $500k a year, joking happens.
I honestly don't know why that makes you so mad. They had no idea this guy was in that sort of medical situation. As said, this type of thing is likely dealt with by the police weekly with the person just going to jail or the mental health ward.

Doesn't make me mad because I know I'm in the minority. Nothing I can realistically do to change that.

Of course they didn't know because they obviously didn't give a shite. That's the point.

Then what is your point? Would you care at all if the cops were laughing if the guy just had fallen asleep and was audibly snoring?

FWIW I'm with you that their behavior was abhorrent. The dude called 911 himself as a medical emergency. Show some fricking compassion.

Honestly, the fact that he died is just the icing on the cake. I had a medical emergency one time as a result of a seizure and when I came out of it I was in a postical state which kind of mirrors being crazy af. The cop that was there was the most caring and helpful person I've met in a long time. Now I'm not saying that all cops need to be fricking angels, but just show a little respect to the people you were hired to serve. This guy called for their help and what he got was far from help.
Mind you, the paramedics really botched this by failing to take vitals and provide appropriate care

Then why don't we just call your expectations unrealistic?
There are +- 850,000 sworn officers in the US, being hired by 18,000 different agencies into a profession where most people become quickly desensitized to horrible human behavior.
There is absolutely no way to effectively screen for which ones might exhibit inappropriate humor one day, or (as you would like) not show appropriate compassion at some point in time to a schizophrenic man on cocaine who clearly needed to be restrained. When you hire 850k people into a shitty job, a hell of a lot of them are going to be like this, and many will be much, much worse.
What you personally "expect" and the actual reality of human behavior is are two different things.

Do they know if he died from suffocation or was it from the drugs?
