My wife went thru a similar situation when her dad passed (He had remarried)
All I can say is, it probably won't end well if the lady is vindictive and unreasonable... so the best thing to do is not fight her (with lawyers) because you feel "this isn't what my dad would have wanted"...
just make peace with the loss of your dad and let everything else go...

A little. Just needed initial confirmation that introducing her as “my father’s wife” was not some grave sin and then got a little sidetracked and needed to explain when people asked about my father handling it.

I have a little experience with this, the family pictures and other personal stuff are part of the estate she can be forced to surrender some of it by the court. Let a estate lawyer handle her, and once its done there is no reason to ever have contact with her again.

First thing I would do is send an email trying to iron everything out. Tell her how you were wrong and go out of your way to apologize and ask her what it would take to make things right, then do it. Why would you skip the part about her having heirlooms that you wanted back? This is what I would do. Also I'am not discounting your statement about her being weird, but she does hold the cards (your dads stuff). And then when she gives you the things you are wanting back, continue to act civilly to a women that helped your dad make it through the later days of his life.
