If you really want the items then you're going to have to play her game. Take your family and her to a restaurant and give it a shot. Do you best to play nice and mention bringing the family by your dad's house the next weekend. While there, take inventory of what you want.
You can either then hire a lawyer to file the paperwork if it is your dad's separate property or you can play nice with her and get it by persuasion. As soon as you get what you want, cut her out totally and completely.

I'd bet decent money she is very lonely, has been abandoned before she met your dad, and just wants validation from you and your family that she belongs with you guys and has a tribe because of your dad. Whether you truly feel that is of no consequence, but you need to make her feel that way while she has the things you want.

Dude, buckle up for a long painful ride anytime you around her and your dad. I was/am (to some extent) in the same boat. My dad married his current wife when I was about that age (I was in my 20's she is #4 or 5 depending on how you count). I got pissed in my 30's at her one time and told her I just had to wait her out because I was blood and she isn't. Bitch is still around.
She is likely insecure if you and your dad have anywhere near a solid relationship. I know my dad's current wife is totally insecure and a complete bitch at times. At least now its at times and not all the time. So there is some progress. What to do? Nothing. If you try you will likely put your old man in a bad spot. Just ride it out, maybe she will get cancer and die.

This is all true, but she has driven a wedge between herself and everyone she knows. With all the things she has said, nobody would ever have a relationship with her and if we faked it she would either drag it out or come after us and physically attack us.

Then you need to get an in and just possibly remove some items for *inspection* while she's not looking. If it is purely sentimental stuff you want then she has the upper hand because she can just destroy it and money wont replace it.
If you have a down arse bitch of a wife, you can maybe have her take the stepmom and the kids to the park or some shite and you can let yourself into your dad's house that you may be the naked owner of depending on the community property situation and there just may be some pictures that end up missing out of the deal
