Hey - do private Catholic schools teach common core in BR? I need to know if I have to learn how to do all this bullshite in advance of my kids starting school...

This is almost as pathetic as the dad who wrote the letter on his kid's assignment bragging about his "Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering".

I think so. They still answer to the local school superintendents to some degree and any public funding assistance is usually tied to standards like CC.
Maybe someone in the biz can verify that.

And if this is a big issue, I'm not sure how anyone in Louisiana ought to hold it.
shite...we're in the low 40's in nearly every meaningful educational category...what exactly are we doing here that's so precious that keeping control over it is worth anything other than the bragging rights of control? Who wants control over a dumpster fire? What's the worry...it's going to get worse?
I could understand this point of view if we lived in a state that was routinely even in the top HALF, but we're not.

Do you even have kids? I want parents and teachers to have the control, not the feds. At least with local school boards, parents can envoke change. I send my kids to a private school, and when I dont like something, I can appeal to an advisory board and the principle, or join the parent council and my voice is heard. They can adapt methods at any time based on what's working and what is not working for the kids. They are free to innovate and try new things. Because of this, they have fantastic outcomes. My school is using CC methods in conjunction with traditional methods and I have no issue with that, my concern is all about the control, and what happens when the feds aren't getting the outomes they desire.
What do you do as a parent when the school standards, cirriculum, and teaching methods are all dictated by the federal government, cause that is where this ride ends.

Dear god thank you. The argument the federal government is taking over is weak at best. I don't care if Obama himself is teaching it as long as it works.

we can't get worse, I think it will help out a lot for the future

I'm willing to bet that I'm better at math than you, but that's not the topic of this thread.
But if you want to play that game,

Do you read threads in which you post? I've stated no less than three times in this thread that I have an 8th grader and a 3rd grader.

This only concerns me if the feds are doing a bad job while the parents are doing a good one. In our case, there is ZERO to indicate that Louisiana is capable in any meaningful way of getting this done right. Why? The answer, I'm confident, is myriad...but somewhere in there is CERTAINLY involvement by groups who need less of it.

Like how they're trying to invoke Intelligent Design into the classroom? Pass.

Seems you've got the handle on your situation...why get involved in the situation of others? Public school education in LA is abysmal...and you're advocating LESS outside intervention? There is nothing to indicate LA is capable of evening admitting there's a problem, let alone fixing it if they did. Those are not the folks I want to be any part of a solution.

First...and I know this is odd in 2015...I'd wait until I felt there was an actual issue before running to social media to bitch about the perils of such and such long before such perils actually occurred.
Secondly...you make it sound like the current model is one in which parents can nearly instantaneously invoke change. That's silly.
In the end, and again...this will not make many happy...I'm responsible for the education of my children. Yes...they attend school, but they do not do so in a damn vacuum. I'm aware of their curriculum, what they're being tested on, etc. I am free to add to and tweak any and all of those things as I see fit. This has happened from the time they were in kindergarten and will continue to do so.

No. absolutely not. Knowing why allows you to figure out the next problem. nowing how only letsyou answer that problem.
Thanks but no thinks. I'll take why every time. and for my kids too.

Too damn bad. Localization of the education has produced terrible results. Change is needed.

I have 2 children right now in private schools. They use different teaching methodologies than when I was taught. It works. My wife and I are both Engineers (educated in Mathematics).
I have no problem with how my children are being taught math.
Don't care one bit about Federal control. Some of the locals scare me tremendously.

We built the bomb and landed on the moon on the backs of the German scientists and academics of the 1940s. If this is your metric, we should do what the Germans were doing in STEM education around 1940 or so...

Can't you get the right answer just as quick if not quicker using the way you were taught?
No. For me, if I'm multiplying 27 x 23, it's MUCH faster for me to:
think 27 x 10 = 270 x 2 = 540 and 27 x 3 = 81 and 540 + 81 = 621
than to:
think 3 x 7 = 21, carry the 2, 3 x 2 = 6 + the carried 2 = 8, mentally place a zero under the 1, then think 2 x 7 = 14, carry the 1, 2 x 2 = 4 + the carried 1 = 5, then add the columns 1 + 0 = 1, 8 + 4 = 12, carry the 1, 5 + the carried 1 = 6.

It is a myth that our country is lacking in STEM knowledge. The poors and trashy people are lacking and they are a growing part of our country.
If you back out trashy inner cities, statistics like lack of STEM knowledge and gun violence all but disappear.

Why don't you read my link so you can understand why the new methods are a much more effective foundation for higher math?
It takes a slight amount more time today, so that way it will be easier for kids to learn higher level math down the road.
Which makes total sense.
But we are a nation of today, we don't prepare or care about the future. If we did, 99 percent of our problems would cease to exist. We want to maximize today, and the hell with tomorrow.
So, it makes total sense that parents would complain about something that is a little harder today, but with a payoff down the road.
