One dad's frustration with his son's second grade math homework is going viral on Facebook after the dad posted a hilarious photo of a check he wrote to the elementary school using the common core math strategy.

"Wrote a check to Melridge Elementary using common core numbers," Herrmann wrote in the caption. "I wonder if they'll take it? #YouFigureItOut"

Is that $10.43 or $8.43?

He wrote $10.43 in the dollar line, but $8.43 in the box.

You dads better learn the Ten frame.

A bunch of fricking idiots are about to come in here crying about having to solve 4 math problems instead of 1.

and proves he's a complete jackass.

But does he have a point? Not at all. Instead of trying to figure out what his child was learning, Herrmann did what so many parents do these days: He complained about something he doesn’t understand. I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t know what “ten-frame” cards were and I wasn’t sure what he was trying to write in his check. Then I spent a couple of minutes doing the research he couldn’t be bothered to do himself.

My son has been doing common core math for two years now. I have helped him with his homework every time he has a question. It usually takes me about 30 seconds to read the directions and understand the steps and why it's being taught. And every time I say the same thing "huh, that makes a lot of sense. I wish I had been taught that way"

Oh, and for you few remaining numb nuts who protest because "Obama",
They still teach the old method first.

Why should a simple check take 4 math problems?

Common Core is like immigration in that both sides of the aisle want it for their own special interests. Republicans are all about making sure the education supply corporations get paid. And democrats want more government control over education.

Well, yes, actually... Why don't you read my link so you can understand why the new methods are a much more effective foundation for higher math?

I'm sure glad my doctor embraces innovation instead of doing things the "old way"

My 60in UHD Flat Panel is a lot nicer than the B&W Tube picture w/ 4 channels that my Dad watched.

But God Forbid we develop new methods for educating kids, especially given Louisiana's stellar track record over the last 100 years.

I'm mid 50's and I've done ten frame in my head all my life. I just never knew it had a name until my kids brought it home.

I just don't get the complete hatred for Common Core. This is 2015 and times change. When I was in school the US was a laughing stock for education and we were all idiots. Over the years the curriculum has gotten harder and more advanced and my 9th grader is taking my freshman LSU math and also my fathers 1947 sophomore LSU geometry. (we found his textbook not long ago). Now everyone complains because the kids have too much homework, backpacks are too heavy ( my kids is 27 lbs) not enough time for year round all star club baseball.

We can't have our cake and eat it too. Or can we?

Why? Can't you get the right answer just as quick if not quicker using the way you were taught?

If you only want the fastest way to add something, why not just use a fricking calculator instead of learning how to add on paper?

Or... maybe the entire point is to teach kids how math works, not just how to add two fricking numbers together.

It shouldn't. There's no need for the implementation of common core in math at levels where only simple arithmetic is being used. It's very inefficient.

I'm not sure what to think here, so I need help. Not a fan of using four problems on paper to solve one problem, but that is kind of how I do it in my head when I don't have paper. I know right, keeping track of four different problems in my head without paper, wow, just wow. My question; as I cant read the numbers in the image, is why are there two rows with four columns in the Dollar Amount and two rows with five columns in the Word Amount? Do these equal the same number; or is this just another gotcha gone bad?

My problem with common core is that it shouldn't matter how a student comes up with the solution if the answer is correct. If a kid wants to do it the old fashion way, or use this common core then so be it. I would even argue that being able to do it using different techniques would make a person even better at it.

First of all, I was being sarcastic. The common core method is better for teaching you how to understand math. People see that it looks like it's more work on paper when it's designed to teach you better habbits.

If you understand the common core method, you can quickly solve addition and multiplication problems in your head without needing paper or a calculator. On top of that, it's teaching you the actual mechanics versus a memorization method which is why our country is so lacking when it comes to STEM knowledge.
