This is really what it boils down to.

Bikers have the right to the same roads as motorists. The truck driver should be jailed for 20 years.

No. Usually where there is no other route or US highway and Interstate are concurrent. But if you are allowed on Interstate you are only allowed to ride on the shoulder, not the travel lane.

This guy was an idiot but sometimes you have to use the Interstate, especially in the west since they're aren't many alternate routes.

I did a few cross country trips back on touring bikes during summers in college. it's an adventure and only road on interstates when necessary. It's fn scary af even riding at the far edge of the shoulder at 12mph on a loaded bike when 18 wheelers fly by at 80mph.

If you could draft them like in Breaking Away, it'd be a different story.

Actually, it depends on what state and what area you are in. There are states that it is allowed on all Interstates, some that it is allowed if there are no suitable alternatives, most often with river crossings or in the middle of nowhere with no secondary roads. Most states have one or two exceptions even if prohibited in general. LA is one with very limited exceptions.

Most people that are not cyclists don't understand the rights cyclists have on the road, that said many cyclists don't observe the rule of the road for them.

Between my freshman and sophomore year of college, I decided on an adventure and went to NYC and rode as a courier. Most people would have a heart attack driving in Manhatten just because of the bikes, nevermind the cars and trucks. I did quickly learn most couriers were amazingly fit junkies and drunks.

Never scared me but I was riding on 4 lane roads with 55mph speed limits from 14yo. I still avoided them like the plague because riding on the shoulder meant plenty of punctures, which is the reason many cyclists cheat out from the edge of the road.

Again, is your bike insured'? If your careless, wobbling arse causes a wreck that damages property or injures people, how will that be covered?
If I wreck at 70+ mph in an effort to save your careless life, are you just going to keep pedaling or will you stop and take responsibility for the accident you caused?

It's sad that a sign has to be put up. You would think even an idiot would know better than to attempt to ride a bike on the interstate, but............

It really says something about what the world has come to when we have to give "proper notice" to require common sense.

I would say maybe 1 out of 100 serious cyclists have separate insurance. Mine is through Spoke and has $100k liability coverage. In the grand scheme of things, bicycle vs car accidents are amazingly rare.

They are rare. But, with the increasing movement to make it legal to ride any and everywhere, I suspect they will become more common. I'm not so much concerned with the damage caused if I collide with a cyclist, but at interstate speeds, the likelihood of more than one vehicle being involved is much greater.
With more and more cyclists with less less experience on the road accidents become more likely. It is bad enough worrying about a few hundred vehicles going 80 mph, but if bikes are thrown in the mix it gets even more dangerous. Just in the past few months I have seen one accident and two near misses. The close calls were due to carelessness on the rider's part. All of those have been on country roads. Put that on an interstate, and I don't think the outcome would be very good.

Pretty much this. It's a sad phenomenon. I've seen those ghost bike memorials at several areas where i would never ride my bike.

losers. I’m a welder and I drive a lifted F-250. If I rode a bike I’d have to invest in tampons and wear skirts.
