Cutting in Line at checkout with "I Have Cancer, and I'm Dying"

Last nite I'm in line at checkout at the local supermarket. I've got a full basket, so I'm skipping the express lane, settling in behind a healthy line of customers, all with full baskets.
An older lady creaks in next to be with her little cart/bag on wheels...."Can I cut in front of you, I have cancer, and the doctor's give me less than a year to live..."
I look down, see that she does only have a few items....".....um, sure, go ahead..."
- respect for elders: sure, go ahead
-I have a bunch of stuff, you have very few items: sure, go ahead
but, to open with "I am going to die of cancer, can I cut in front of you" ??
really? You lead with that?

You should have told her to use the express lane so she doesn't die in line.

That is a very odd line to begin with.
Not to laugh at cancer, but it's more of a second line.
"Hi, I'm Stu"
---"I Have cancer and have less than a year to live"
"oh well nice meeting you"
Just odd.

Your answer:
We're all dying..You're just in the fast lane.

I feel like if you are going to go all in with the "I'm dying of cancer" card, you may as well shot for 1st in line. You can't just drop that for 3rd or 4th--can't drop it so loosely or else you'll soon get the reputation of "hag who cried cancer."

Can you post a description? She may be the serial grocery store crop duster. Consider yourself lucky

If she was really old, you should have told her that she has lived a long life, that you'll be lucky to live as long as her and to fook off.

The thing is...everybody is dying.

that was my instant first instinct.
the grocery store was pretty busy, and all lanes had long lines, even the express checkout. I did glance up, but then said frick it..."yeah, just go ahead"
Not kidding, she had a little of an accent...German, jewish? not sure. Doesnt matter
it doesnt matter that she wanted to cut in - I didnt care, I dont care. She was an older lady, and she really did only have a few items
but, just right out of the gate...."I have cancer........."
she didnt even lead with "Can I skip in line here? " and then follow wtih "....because I have cancer"
just BOOM - I HAVE CANCER.....and now I'm going to ask for special treatment

Is Rebirth playing at the "I've Got Cancer" second line?
"I've got a big fat tumor, and I won't live long.
Oh, I've got a big fat tumor, and I won't live long."

This reminds me of my Monday morning flight. I get on the plane (regional jet with a one and two setup) and there is a woman with her two kids, both under two, in my seat and the one next to it. I tell her I'm in 6d. She says she is too. I ask if she's sure it wasn't 16,and she starts fumbling for her boarding pass, which of course she "can't find." Then she starts talking about how maybe they can sit in 7, and "we can just sit anywhere haha". I'm a little annoyed at the obvious lie, but I sit in 6a and wait for that person to get there. He does and I walk to the back of the plane and wait for everyone to be seated.
They ask for her boarding pass, and when she says she doesn't have it, they ask me to get off the plane so they can figure it out. I wanted to stand my ground and say I have the boarding pass, but the whole mom with two kids thing got me so I took a voucher and a later flight.
I was fine with doing it because I have two under two and I understand what a pain that is, but the lying to my face like I was an idiot pissed me off a little.

Which part?
The original flight was at 850 but was delayed and ended up leaving at 945. The flight I got on left at 1030. The delay already had me missing a meeting I didn't really need to join, so it was a lot of variables that came together. They offered a $300 dollar voucher, but I got them up to $400.
But seriously, I wasn't about to make a woman pack up her bags and kids and get off the plane. The airline surely had some fault since she couldn't have got on without a boarding pass without some help. I just chalked it up as a chance to practice compassion and patience. It's nice to know it's still in there somewhere.
