What would you have done if this flight wasn't for work and you needed to get where you were going(and there wasn't a flight available within the hour for you to be on)?

We're all dying of something now go to the back of the line.

I would have taken my seat.
It's not about an obligation to accept a situation, it's about making a choice based on the variables presented. If I couldn't have done it without issue, I wouldn't have. The opportunity to help someone out and get fair consideration without losing anything was there.

I'll take your word for it, because I'm not reading all that.
One of his definitions for a Beta is "colors within the lines"! Seriously

I want this to be an episode of curb your enthusiasm

They ask for her boarding pass, and when she says she doesn't have it, they ask me to get off the plane so they can figure it out.
That's messed up. If you don't want to make her move so be it, but she needs to produce a boarding pass so you can take her seat if you don't feel like making her move.
I mean, it's great and all that you got a voucher but it's still messed up.

But it also provided a gain to you....the $400 voucher you received. You wouldn't have allowed yourself to be bumped off without being compensated for it now would you?

No. What's your point? Have I gone from beta to opportunistic a-hole?

Nah, just shows you are less beta than others were pointing out. But not completely a selfless act either.
Like someone else mentioned...it's crappy on the airlines part that they didn't first ask the woman without the boarding pass to step off the plane. They should have asked her first, and then you could have volunteered to step off then. That's what would have made me more irritated "wait I have a boarding pass and she doesn't...yet I have to step off the plane???"

In an overbooking situation, which is what they classified this as, someone who was booked on the flight would have taken a later flight and gotten a voucher. It didn't have to be me, but I decided to make it me. It sped up the process and everyone else took the flight they were scheduled to take.
I never said it was a selfless act. It certainly made it easier on the woman and everyone else who would have had to wait for it all to play out. Most acts of kindness have an aspect of selfishness, even if it's just the good feeling of doing something nice.
If alpha vs. beta ever comes up in your head in this situation, you're about as helpless as they are.

My family decided a few years ago to go to golden corral for thanksgiving (trashy, I know).
There were a shite ton of people in line. I'd been standing in line for 45 minutes with my g/f my parents, uncles, and grandparents when this old couple comes and wedges themselves in front of me.
They didn't ask to cut or anything. I said "What the hell are you doing?" They looked shocked and said "we're old, our feet hurt". I said "Then you're old enough to know better than to cut in line. You don't see my grandma cutting in line or complaining, do you? Get to the back of the line."
Had they asked I probably would have let them in front of me. I guess they thought being 65+ gave them the right to do whatever the frick they wanted.

You'd be a huge dip shite if you lived life according to the OT. It was the right move. Life is about choices. I made the right one here. I wasn't bent out of shape about starting Monday a little later, that's for sure.
Bottom line, we each should make decisions (hopefully good choices) and not worry about what other people think. Maybe your spouse and family, but your life is for you to live not for anyone else to dictate. You made the right decision and got the most out of it. You did what is best for you.

I got $1300 for an overbooking situation. Airlines are shite.

I'm with you. ANYBODY that has a handful of items is welcome to go before me if I have a cartful.
Try to elicit sympathy w/ a cancer plea.... frick you, POS.
Just ask nicely with a reasonable request and 99% of people will go along with it out of logical decency.
I've experienced the opposite where some fat hag had a cart packed and booger eating kid while I just had a couple items in my hands and she scornfully gave me the stink eye as she was putting her items on the belt. Store only had 1 register open so I was fricked. She also paid w/ EBT while I paid cash. frick her.
I mean you know you're going to take a long time to check out, it doesn't enter your fat head to let someone go ahead of you when it's going to take less than a minute for them to do their transaction. Courtesy and manners might should be a class taught in school, it'd better our society and interactions with each other.

And it seems you want the same attention she does by starting this thread.. What do you know, people are almost all the same.
