Flowers was arrested and subsequently tried SIX TIMES for the murder of four people in Winona, Mississippi in 1996.
Prosecutorial shenanigans by racist DA Doug Evans resulted in six trials, six convictions, several death sentences, and six overturned convictions.
Flowers was finally released on bond in 2019, and charges dropped in 2020. He spent 23+ years in prison, a large portion of it on death row.
A very gifted Gospel singer, he spent most of the last 5 years caring for his father, who had dementia. Flowers was battling diabetes, although his cause of death has not been released.
If this case interests you, or if you are a fan of true crime podcasts, season 2 of the “In the Dark” podcast by Madeleine Baran covers Flowers’ ordeal. It is probably the best podcast I have ever listened to.
The saga of Curtis Flowers is a perfect example of why we should not have the death penalty. Evans decided Flowers was guilty and did whatever he wanted in order to get that result. Evans never paid a price. At least Flowers got to die a free man in his own bed.

Is this the new “he sang in the church choir”?
ETA: the dudes own Wikipedia page is like “he did it but the prosecutor was racist by not having enough black jurors”

Well, he did, but he really was a gifted singer. I’ve heard recordings of him.
I know what you’re trying to do, but it’s not funny.

It sounds like the case was overturned on technicalities even though it was a circumstantial slam dunk

Nowhere on his Wiki page does it say “he did it.”

How do you feel about oj Simpson

Odd that the murder weapon “disappeared” after being turned over to law enforcement.

Is Doug Evans still alive? If so, why?
ETA: OP, are you leaving anything out?

Not so sure this is accurate.
Were all 4 trial convictions by supposed juries wrong? Why must you have your own color on the jury to “make it fair”?

Curtis Flowers was suspected after police learned that he had been fired from the store 13 days prior to the murders. He also owed Bertha Tardy $30 for a cash advance on his paycheck.
Certain eyewitnesses said they saw Flowers near the front of the store on the morning of the shootings. No gun was found, but bullets from the scene were determined to be the same caliber as a gun that had been stolen from Flowers's uncle's car the same day as the murders. The Mississippi Crime Lab found that bullets fired previously from the uncle's gun matched the ballistics evidence of bullets found at the murder scene.

The prosecution said that bloody footprints found at the crime scene were a size 10½, the same as that worn by Flowers. They were identified as Fila's Grant Hill style, which witnesses said Flowers had been wearing that morning.
quote:
Forensic evidence revealed gunpowder residue on Flowers's hand
quote:
He stated he had simply stopped going to the job and did not know he had been fired. He said he was wearing Nike shoes that day, the clothes he was wearing did not match the description given by eyewitnesses, and the particulate matter on his hands was due to his having handled fireworks the day before the murders
Sounds pretty guilty to me

A false sentence doesn't equate to the death penalty not existing.
There are plenty of clear cut, no doubt cases that absolutely deserve the death penalty.

Wrongfully convicted doesn’t quite fit this type of case IMO.
And let’s not forget the blacks on the jury voted to acquit on the hung ones.
Hmmmmmmm OJ ring a bell?
Yeah we knew he was guilty but we wanted to stick it to whitey.
Racism on both sides. But this doesn’t mean he’s innocent.

Was Curtis Flowers executed by the state?

quote:I have always had a hard time with this because of the amount of innocent people our government has killed - without public confession or hard dna evidence, I really can't support it. I'm not exactly saying they should live their lives in luxury on our dime either. We do need to build more prisons and make them as mentally uncomfortable as possible.

Can you imagine being some sheriffs deputy in the Mississippi delta where your usual detail is moving cows off the road and directing traffic at the high school and then you get a execution style quadruple murder
And after you lovingly check your bloody footprint against all the shoes at the Walmart two counties away and match ballistics and round up witnesses some rich kids from a fancy law school in the city show up and tell you that you don’t know how to do your job
They should have an innocence project for small town law enforcement just doing the best they can

America in the way past. Innocent until proven guilty (constitutional protections).
America during Rodney King cops trial and OJ. Guilty even if proven innocent.
American now. Guilty if alleged, even if not charged (Cornell 7).
