Why would it be against the law for me to put fireworks on my own porch? The minute that my package is taken, I am the only victim in this scenario.

because its a booby trap that can cause injury to an individual. regardless if they are a thief or not its against to law. Also, what's to stop an kid or someone just moving the box aside who had no ill intentions.

You have to take every measure to prevent from liability.
Sucks, but it's the way things are now. If that guy had say, fallen off of a step and broken his ankle, he could've definitely sued. Insurance likely would've paid out even though he was committing an illegal act. Sucks because the insured gets no such luck.
