In the early 90s I had a consulting gig where the business put us up in a tiny condo in Greenwich and we got to wake up every day, hit a diner across the street and catch the subway to Manhattan and party with the owner after hours.

How were you catching the subway in Greenwich?

That's terrifying. I have a relative who operates cranes like this. Those dudes make bank, but you couldn't pay me enough to do that.

Oh, then you were already in Manhattan, so you didn’t need to catch a subway to get there.

Regardless, it’s a cool story.

I admittedly know nothing about how those things operate.

How do they not just fall over? They always look way too top heavy and unstable.

How does the operator get up to their cage every day?

Jesus Christ you are insufferable. Maybe I should specify it was LOWER Manhattan and the subway could get us to the office in like 6 minutes as opposed to walking a million blocks.

Well, yes, maybe you should have. It would have been correct. Your earlier description was incorrect, and therefore confusing. You don't have to be a bitch about it. I was just trying to figure out where you were staying.

The crane is owned by New Jersey-based Lomma, whose late founder James Lomma was ordered to pay $96 million to two construction workers killed when another of his cranes collapsed in 2008.

Should have used an EV instead of something that requires gas and oil. Those things never catch fire.

Oh wait...

Hudson Yards just seems cursed.

Always been a cool project but plenty of companies full of woke in that footprint.

Crazy how empty most of the buildings were last time I was there.

They are basically bolted into concrete at the base, and are sometimes also supported by the adjacent building as well depending on height / load requirements.

Additionally, there’s counterweight behind the cab to balance the load. And tower cranes generally can’t lift huge loads. Their purpose is more for reach/height when building tall structures.

Elevator that goes up and down the mast (the “tower” part of a tower crane).

ETA: In this case, the crane appears to be supported by the building:

That would have been helpful. I was also puzzling over your subway to Manhattan from Greenwich comment which was reasonably confusing to those of us familiar with that area.
And as he stated - cool story.
NYC is a strange place with a lot of good and bad jumbled together.

The FDNY's response was comical. It looked like they were pissing on the fire from an adjacent building. They obviously don't have an air drop capability.
