Couldn't sleep last night--been watching Counting Crows concerts on YouTube for 4 hours

They're my favorite band by far, but this isn't really a thread about that. And it's why it's on here instead of the music board. But I've seen a bunch of posts over the years with people complaining about bands not playing songs exactly like their album versions. And I just don't get that. At all. Why even go to a concert if you just want to hear songs sound exactly like they do on their respective albums? Just listen to the albums.
And if you've ever seen a Counting Crows show, you know they don't play anything like they do on their ablums. In 30 years, I don't think they've ever played a song the same, not just as the album, but from show to show. Part of the reason I love them. Anyway, boring Sunday morning thoughts on how you prefer your concerts? Thoughts on Counting Crows welcome too, I guess. Anybody at my 1st of 25+ shows seeing them at the Saenger in early '97 with Fiona Apple opening right after "Criminal" blew up? Pretty fricking amazing show.

I haven't slept a week at all either. But no music because my wife is sleeping so I've been looking at tracts of land to buy for hunting and timber and what not.

Noise cancelling headphones have admittedly been clutch. But I didn't sleep Friday night, either. Not a second of sleep since Thursday night/Friday morning. Lot on my mind, I suppose. I keep waiting for the crash, but so far, it's stubbornly eluded me. The bastard. Wish I were being as productive as to be shopping for tracts of land to buy. I suppose I'd have to have the money for that, though. Maybe you're the bastard.

You're supposed to count sheep.

Disagree, but I am a fan. Love Shake Your Money Maker, but Southern Harmony is elite.

Only saw them once in 99 and Adam Duritz was so drunk that they only played 3 songs and exited stage. Pretty disappointing.

I like the songs played exactly like they are played on the album. Just one reason I won’t be going into any more Counting Crows shows. Nobody can ruin a song like an Adam Duritz 3 minute spoken word soliloquy right in the middle of what should be Round Here. This doesn’t happen at my Metal shows.

Always seemed like sorority girl music.

A friend of mine saw them like ten years ago and I guess Adam was hammered and it was a total trainwreck.

You couldn’t just throw on one of their slow sappy songs like Long December.
Sometimes those slow songs are my version of Unisom or Melatonin.

quote:How different? Completely new arrangement or some major change or just different instrumentation maybe an extra verse, or effects allowed for or required by playing live? I probably agree with you unless its a bastardization of the song.

I've posted before that I know it's an excessive aversion, but I've walked out of places when it came on over the pa system. In fact I really don't like anything of theirs I've heard, but I won't say something ridiculous like "they suck", just not at all for me.
Thoughts on Counting Crows welcome too

I have seen them three times: first time was pretty good in Atlanta, second time was slightly annoying because their changes to the songs were questionable at best but ok, the most recent and last time I will pay to see them was like a Phish concert. It was almost unbearable and several fans in the back walked out after they butchered the first 3-4 songs. I don’t understand how bands actually believe that’s a good thing other than the same few crazy loons in the first few rows. To put it in perspective, I have seen Third Eye Blind, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Foo Fighters probably a dozen times in concert over the years and they are clearly older but still sound pretty good/close to the original. The only band comparable to CC’s douch baggery is Metallica but that’s only because they won’t play virtually anything live that’s not on their deep cut albums.

Now things like this are worthy of real scorn. I get the "partying rock star" bit, but to do it multiple times is low rent. I've been to hundreds of shows, 97% of what I've seen live has been mostly in venues less than 1500 and never experienced that. To do it when you're pulling in thousands is disgusting.
