For two people

We usually eat out once a week which adds at a min 100 per month. So 270 on groceries would probably be less than we're currently doing but doable.

The 3 member $776 would barely feed my teenage boy these days.... skinny as a rail but must have hollow legs and the metabolism of a hummingbird.

I spend close to the max allowed for my family of 5. The line between being a freeloader vs productive member of society is getting mighty close to middle class. May as well say frick it divorce the wife and quit my job so we can both collect

That's $2/meal.

Thats exactly what I estimate my meals at home to cost and they are usually a little less.

Note that this is in Louisiana, not NYC or California. These amounts are excessive.

I am 100% certain that no one here would be able to feed a family on the estimated average benefit
the ‘S’ in SNAP stands for ‘supplemental’

In most states, if not disabled, the SNAP recipient must work at least 20 hours or be in search of work.

This is supposed to be a supplement, not the whole budget. It’s still way too much.

Not even taking into consideration that any school aged children get two (and often 3) free meals a day at school, cooking bulk meals like chili, stew, soups etc can be cooked for very cheap. Grits/oatmeal for breakfast.

These amounts are very generous.

Like I said we average about 150 a week for basically every meal for 4 people and that includes everything else we buy from walmart and sam's household item wise ( teenage boy and 1st year college girl) and we have no problem having enough food.

We don't eat steak and crab alot and we buy alot of great value brand stuff. But we sure don't eat bad or even live off rice, beans, and grits.

Fajitas, Enchiladas with Guac Salad, Carnitas, Meat and Veggies of mulitple types, Homemade BBQ (taters, sandwiches, nachos), Stir fry, Soups, Roasts, Salads, etc etc

But I cook alot and try to avoid processed premade meals like box lasagna, etc.

I also make sure things don't go to waste. Which I think makes alot of people spend way more than they need to.

We portion meals, eat leftovers, and seal and store things properly to prevent waste. Vac seal and freeze if needed, etc. We throw almost nothing away.

Yes. And I think it’s ridiculous they are getting summer benefits for lunches on top.

in Louisiana they cannot buy hot food

Every time the governor declares a state of emergency for a hurricane (or pandemic) or something similar, food stamps can be used for hot food. It sometimes takes MONTHS for him to end the order. That's why you see people buying hot food, even when they haven't even been affected. Some will go to super nice restaurants and not leave tips after paying with food stamps. It's out of control.

Cheap hearty foods such as cabbage, potatoes, rice, pastas, and beans go a long way with cheap proteins.

You would have to stay away from anything pre-prepared, heat and eat, and frozen (except vegetables.)

Yes I could easily do it. My wife and I spend about $100 total per week on food and a lot of it is stuff we don't really need. If I HAD to it wouldn't be that hard to eat for $300 a month.

We need to eat less anyways.

It would be one thing if we transferred all of this wealth from middle class people to “poor” people and got gratitude and good behavior from the recipients in return.

Instead they get all this and are more bitter and resentful and demanding than ever.
