Not really. With all that "wasteland" in West Texas the state granted vast amounts of mineral rights to UT. Much of that turned into producing acreage and with the current activity in unconventional production there is yet another windfall to the University system. Louisiana oil and gas production is in an advanced state of decline and simply does not throw off the revenue that Texas does. If it would have done this 100 years ago it may have worked.

Please, for the love of God, do not emulate UT.

Just take the money from the Loop's budget. They'll never miss it.

There is not enough money in all of Louisiana to fill the money pit that is LSU.

No, because they're Texas and we're Louisiana.

The state is wayyyyyy too corrupt and arse backwards to do that. Look at our history. We will be one of the last states to fall for marijuana legalization when it would be an absolute goldmine in this state and there are literally zero negative consequences to doing it. This state will never be able to get out of it’s own way because it is incapable of producing the leadership necessary to do it.

LSU is barely one step ahead of Southern & Grambling when it comes to management and administration.

Well that’s not true at all. It would only take one decent person that wanted this state to succeed to make huge positive changes but if you look at the way our president is treated there’s not much motivation to do so.

LSU is barely getting by. Year after year the state is reducing funding to LSU. Leaves LSU no choice but to increase tuition.

They bought land 200 years ago for expansion purposes and there happened to be oil underneath.

Correction:

The State of Texas retained all of its public lands upon entering the Union in 1846, 2 million of which were set aside to benefit The University of Texas by the current state constitution adopted in 1876 (the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas -- today's aggy -- is considered a constitutional branch of The University of Texas).

The land was meant to graze cattle and perhaps be sold piecemeal, much like land-grant colleges were funded by the federal government. The West Texas land was considered to have relatively little value.

That changed when oil was found in 1929 in what's called the Permian Basin. A&M, which previously didn't want anything to do with the land and from which they received no proceeds, pissed and moaned to the state legislature (surprise, surprise) to get 1/3 of the endowment proceeds that were now fueled by oil royalties (but not the land, the title of which is still held by The University of Texas).

The proceeds were expanded in 1984 to include other (but not all) UT and A&M system schools and departments.

However, UT Austin gets most of the yearly payouts, by far. And why shouldn't we? We're The University of Texas.

A lot of responses in the thread will advocate for legalizing weed. Weed can make people unproductive. But you know who does make Louisiana unproductive? The stupid fricks who think weed should be illegal.

does the State have any revenue producing assets

You, Baw. You are the asset that is to be taxed, with ever-expanding taxes, and new creative taxes. You will also pay higher fees for Licenses, permits, or anything you have to approach them for. The hungry hand of gubmint is always out.

Once you think you cannot stand anymore taxes, they will write you a few tickets for running yellow lights and slow rolling through stop signs.

You are an ATM.

The government should not attempt to produce revenue through harvesting of natural resources. In fact, it should not be involved in any profit-generating business at all. Not only is this taking a risk with public funding, but government entities are inherently very bad at this type of enterprise.

Lol. They can't even budget their own dollars without trying to steal more, so they are going to route $160 million out of the kindness of their hearts without dipping into it?

Tomato, potato.

LSU doesn't have anything like this.
