I hit up Sams tonight instead of Costco. Sams doesn't make me wear a mask and I can skip the checkout using the app.
I'll go to Costco when they don't require masks. They have a right to set their rules. Thought about dumping the membership but they have the cheapest 93 oct by far.

I would assume his not having a mask would suffice for your query. They weren't doing this for his safety. All are assumed to have it, hence the (stupid) mask policy.

He should have just told the manager he is medically exempt per his doctor's orders. That has worked for me three times so far when some Karen manager has hassled me over my non-mask wearing ways.
One asked what medical condition would cause that my simple response of the information is protected by HIPAA shut that down with quickness. Every manager has had HIPAA drilled into them by HR and know they can't "fight" HIPAA.

I don’t have a problem with Costco instituting this policy.
I have not been to Costco since instituting this policy, nor will I return until the policy is rescinded. I believe businesses should be allowed to make their own policies and I should be allowed to react accordingly as a customer.
Miss them big ole packs of water though.

That's exactly what I've done at Costco since this policy went into place. They never hesitate to say Thanks and wave me right in. They cannot require you to tell them what condition prevents you from wearing a mask - they can ask, but you don't have to answer.

Wrong.
The policy, as per their website, state:
Face Covering Requirements
To protect our members and employees, effective May 4, all Costco members and guests must wear a face covering that covers their mouth and nose at all times while at Costco. This requirement does not apply to children under the age of 2 or to individuals who are unable to wear a face covering due to a medical condition.
The use of a face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing. Please continue to observe rules regarding appropriate distancing while on Costco premises. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

I recently posted a similar issue with Walmart's receipt checker at the exit which led to a 35 page thread. Some raised the point Costco and Sam's do the same thing and it was pointed out that one was required to comply as you have to be a member to shop at these places. I have never seen their membership agreements but will stipulate that is correct.
That being said, the argument would appear to be the membership contract spells out the things a member agrees to when signing up. I doubt being forced to wear a mask is one of the things stated in the contract. Since there is a governing agreement which sets forth each member's obligation what gives the store the right to demand something not set forth in the agreement.
Spare us the their store , their policy argument, I have seen it a hundred times and don't disagree in general. However, there is a governing contract with Costco which may supersede this argument unless the contract language is broad enough to give the store such latitude.

The agreement itself gives them the right.
Have you never read an agreement?
They can at any time unilaterally change the agreement. That is literally in every agreement.
