President should issue an executive order capping the price here at $50.

Yes they are.
So are the regulations that protect Mylan from competition.

As determined by who?
Profit is not the driving force behind R&D. Absurd profit is the driving force.

This is not CLOSE to the truth. Gouging capitalist scumbags are the true scourge creating our ridiculous income inequality. Price controls are a simple and effective tool.
But, I'm not going to argue any more because I clearly am 100% correct on this issue.

It's certainly true that FDA approval is sort of like having a goverment-granted monopoly. This could be addressed in much the same way we do with utilities - require that prices also get approval.
Of course, that has its own set of problems, such as regulatory capture. And let's face it, the government is not always very good at determining what is best for the consumer.
This could work if this regulatory price setting panel was made up of actual professionals and experts in the field. Utility regulation (at least in LA) is made up of elected officials who get huge campaign contributions from the companies they are regulate.

Another alternative is to simply stop requiring FDA approval. Then prices could adjust far more rapidly. Of course then people would scream that we need government oversight to prevent dangerous products from getting out there.
There has to be a way to have effective, efficient review of products before they reach the market. Maybe use some sort of peer review process as opposed to heavy handed government control.

One rule "Can't sell for more than $x."
And only do it in cases of price gouging.
Government dictating what a business can or can't sell its products for isn't over regulation?
And I'm not entirely sure you understand what price gouging is and what causes it.

Yet, you can't see increased competition as a better solution.

This has ZERO to do with "r and d." If "r and d" costs were an issue, they would have charged more at the onset then reduced the price as they recovered their r and d investment. This went in reverse, so it definitely and undeniably and unequivocally was "lets see how much we can force people to pay."

If the messenger had his or her facts straight, he or she could make a much more compelling claim. When your claims are refuted with minimal effort, whatever shred of truth they had is going to be ignored. Again, the truth is bad enough in this case, so there is no need to exaggerate.

Oh I know it will, but I'd imagine the EpiPen is a drop in the bucket compared to other cost drivers.
I'm sure it is... but this is just one example. Add up tons of other examples out there and here we go.

Sounds like it's time for a different company to come in and sell the epipen at a more reasonable price. That would be capitalism working.
exactly

A price control doesn't tell a business what it can or can't sell. It keeps that business from price gouging.
I wouldn't object to a windfall profits tax either.
Time to rein in the obscenely wealthy and give back to those who don't have all the opportunities (or influence).

post your email again and I'll send you one right now (but I did send one to you, as you recall, I posted a screenshot).

I bought some in May, and paid $0. Insurance covered them 100%. So I'm confused as to what or no insurance are they using.

I don't want the PRESIDENT to have that kind of EXECUTIVE POWER to order price controls on medicines. That would be a scary exercise.
I have no issues whatsoever with Congress putting together a comprehensive bill that addresses medical prices in this country, signed by the president, and enacted with meaningful, clear regulation. I would support that type of effort.

This would be a disaster. The FDA provides more help than harm. And this is coming from someone who works for Big Pharma.

I didn't read the whole thread but has anyone mentioned adereject as an alternative to epi pen?
No, adrenaject has not been mentioned. There appear to be two additional alternatives as well.

How do you know increased competition wouldn't drive the price down to about $20 a dose?
