My sister wants to fill in her pool. She got a quote for 23,000. She told the guy that she heard in Baton Rouge that it was 8-10,000. He said there’s a law in Lafayette that requires you to take all the concrete completely out before putting dirt in so that’s why it’s more expensive. Is that true? Most people have the concrete jackhammered and some of it is left in the hole with the dirt. You can’t build on it afterwards but if you don’t want to then it shouldn’t be a problem.
So is this guy lying about this law?

I know Chicken wants thread titles to be descriptive, but you took it to the next level.

even if they do need to remove the concrete, doesn't seem like that would more than double the price of it. if the jackhammering and fill dirt is included in the 8-10k price, I'm sure you could find some day laborers to remove chunks of concrete for under 15k

I couldn’t fit all the words and am curious about the price and this supposed law

Plausible in Lafayette, but it's also plausible that the guy is a charlatan and lying to her.

Why not just ask the guy to show you the law?

She didn’t think to do that. She has to get other estimates either way so if the next guy tells her the same thing ....

No way it's that much lol. Even if you removed the concrete, two guys and a jackhammer can do that in a day or 2 days tops.
The dirt for the hole would be the most expensive part I would think.
You can tear down and remove an entire house for under $15k.

Did your sister just make the one phone call, or is there just the one guy in Lafayette who does this type of thing?

My neighbors whose backyard meets mine filled in their pool. They jackhammered the concrete apron surrounding the pool down to a foot or so below grade. They got a pump of some kind and set it up in front of their house, and they shoveled sand into the pump and had about a 6" hose snaked down the side of the house to the pool. They had 5 or 6 guys and it took them a couple of days to fill the pool.

They couldn't get a bobcat back there? Maybe didn't want to tear their yard up? 3 guys with a jackhammer and a bobcat (preferably a bobcat with a jackhammer attachment) could demolish a pool and refill it in probably 3 days tops, maybe 2 days. Drop the concrete into the bucket of a bobcat into a dumpster, then have dump trucks drop the dirt in the front yard and bobcat it into the hole in the pool.

What pool? (Fill it and move on)
Posted on 3/16/18 at 11:17 am to berrycajun
find another contractor, Consider a partial fill and turning it into a landscape pond or water garden. This changes the whole concept and the concrete may not have to be removed- Call a landscape company

Why not just sell her pool to that guy that was on here yesterday saying he wanted to put one in?
win-win

No doubt. Jackhammer the concrete below grade and start shoveling. Nobody will ever ask about it. If they do, tell them they’re welcome to grab a shovel and check your work. Guarantee they won’t.
