Use a Spinbrush. Cleans teeth better than anything I’ve seen. Use twice daily.

8 bucks.

not really related because I don't need a deep cleaning, just a regular 6 month visit, but is there a dentist in NW Houston known for especially hot hygentist? I know BR has offices that are set up for the creeper crowd, of which I am on the board. Any place I should check for first? I have time here, I just had my cleaning in April so time is on my side.

I've actually been successful in the hygienist/dental assistant market so I have a bit of a process and patience with the long game since I only see them every 6 months, at first.

Pretty sure most of the time it's them getting more money from you or your insurance. A certain dentist I went to would always say I needed x,y or z when I went. Deep cleaning, filling, filling that turned into crown that turned into root canal. Something every year for 4 straight years. I switched dentists and haven't needed a "deep cleaning" or had a cavity in 3 years with the new dentist.

I'm assuming you're talking about getting a scaling and root planing. That's way more involved than getting a normal cleaning. Since they have to actually clean underneath the gums very heavily it usually take a few visits to complete and requires local anesthetic. I've never had one myself, but I can ask my wife how much they charge for them at her office

This is exactly the "deep" cleaning I'm talking about. They want to charge me $290 per quadrant and do it in 4 separate visits. So a total cost of $1,160.

I got a bad vibe from the hygienist that worked on me, so I guess that's why I'm questioning everything about this.

And it's not Aspen or any of the other dental mills, a single practice dentist in NOLA.

What the hell is that hygienist doing at your 6 month check-ups that requires you to need a deep cleaning?

What? You bullshitting me? Do they break out the special tools for a deep cleaning?
Not only special tools but sedation.

The normal little curved picks only reach about 1/8" below the gumline.

A "deep cleaning" they cut the gums away from teeth and sew them back after cleaning, scraping, spraying/washing as far as to the roots. Versed has been dripping the 2 times I had mine done.

The "4 quarters" is how they divide the work as in left top and bottom, or whole bottom and then a couple weeks later the other half. Otherwise there is too much pain and swelling to take in food even in liquid form. Even with a high level of pain tolerance I take the 7.5mg hydrocodone for 3 days minimum.

My Paternal side of the family has periodontal disease as a genetic trait. ALL of my grandparents descendants have it including my Dentist cousin and his 2 brothers.(casual chatting with both cousin and the oral surgeon he referred me led to accidental HIPAA violation revealing all of us as patients. we just don't mention that.) Considering my paternal grandparents had 10 kids we're talking now about 150 descendants that have issues.

At least we have better methods available than my Dads generation. They used to literally cut him open and scrape his mandible bone because they didn't have the knowledge, techniques, training, and tools available to catch it early enough.

My sister put hers off due to family/job/etc situation to the extent that her teeth will soon be falling out as no hope is her prognosis. She was the straight laced goody two shoes of the family always following the rules and brushing/flossing daily. Her teeth are great, it's the disease of the gums that does it.

TLDR: to answer OP about cost, mine is about $1500 each half or $3k whole mouth. Stock up on Jello and Pudding as well as soup stock, also noodles not rice (those grains will get stuck between your teeth once the swelling goes down)

Man yours is more intense than most. My wife does maybe 2-3 deep cleanings a week and they never have to do that part. And they dont typically do IV drips either. Yours must be worst than most deep cleanings. Assuming you go to a periodontist for yours?

This, never go to a dentist that you have seen on tv or a billboard.

This reads like a horror story. Not like that soft core stuff, like Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street. I mean like Hostel and Bone Tomahawk.

Is a “deep cleaning” different than usual cleaning every 6 months?

I have no idea what it cost, my insurance pays it.

Best Oral Surgeon in the State. Keep in mind my cousin the dentist was not only the President of the State Dental Association but also the ADA for as long as he chose so he knows the best of the best nationwide. The same oral surgeon he sent his own immediate family to.

So while mine may be more intensive than most, it is about average for the extended family. That's with 2x daily power brushing, flossing, proxybrush, and softpicks.

(gotta watch the proxybrush, the little twisted wire holding the brushes is sharp where cutoff, got a nasty infection when distraction caused me to poke my gum instead of slipping between teeth. had to get opened and cleaned out which led to a 2nd infection from the sutures falling out of the sterile packaging and dragging across non sterile skin)

More like Dustin Hoffman scene in Marathon Man.

Same thing happened to me. Due to Covid I missed an appointment so it ended up being 9-10 months instead of the usual 6. They recommended a shite ton of treatment which was $1750 after insurance. I’ve never had a visit that cost more than $170 in the few years been going to this particular dentist.

I assume it was a money grab since they been slow. I told them no thanks and finished check-up. I will be going to a new dentist. I can’t trust them any longer.
