Don’t need to build a kit car, just get the right fast car to start with and make it faster.

Shitty screenshot from a shaky video but that’s going through the lights at the Texas mile. Trap was 188.

188? Impressive. Now you just need another, what, 300-400 HP for that next 45 MPH since drag climbs as a function of speed squared?

Until you've done it, repeated it, and documented it, you haven't done anything.

This was in a standing mile. Not ringing the cars neck for every last mph. That car made about 1500hp on race gas. And it was an old arse Gallardo.

We wore that car out at the mile that year. He replaced it with a Huracan but we haven’t been able to make it and I need to spend some time learning the weird Motec integration they use on the new ones to crank the boost up.

It had plenty of legs left in it but just ran out of space.

ice. And to note in 1988 the C4 Callaway Corvette Sledgehammer hit 255 mph.

Some nerd in the comments left this little tidbit.

Too bad nobody had a phone to record that in '88.

I was around the car business in that era. The Sledgehammer was a bespoke one-off car in every sense. It even had specially built Goodyear tires for the speed record, there was nothing else in production like them. They made like two sets, maybe three. It had a custom body, just about every panel, with completely customized air management under the hood and under the car. IIRC, they went to the extent of duct taping every seam on the car too. The car bore virtually no relation to the "production" 125 Callaway TT Corvette cars, which only had a bit more than half the power of the Sledgehammer.

You can drive the new car off the showroom floor and do this. With a factory warranty. That's the difference.

That famed 1988 corvette was also geared and tired for top speed only. An unusable car day to day. More like a salt flat racer.

C8 is boring fast. Engineered to feel heavy and stable. I own old cars with equal horsepower to the C8 and those feel exciting at 60mph. C8 gets up to 100 with no effort on an on ramp. I cannot imagine how fast the new ZR1 feels.

GM has been wanting to go all in on a mid-engine Corvette for decades. This is it.

Good for them, but the new mid-engine look is very “meh” and not unique looks like they are copying Ferrari, which is uncool.

Meh.

Design is subjective, but I would not say they are directly copying.

If you notice every mid-engine car looks similar, wide rear to accommodate the engine while the front is more narrow. It's more that designers are forced to design around the mid-engine engineering.

Many will hate simply because it's American, like the guys saying they would take a Porsche Boxster over this car.

Then they aren't car guys, they're marque guys.

I love my GTS, but the C8 was a game-changer, in every iteration.
Affordable, (base LT1 trim) and relatively speaking, in this model as well.

Our ICE cars are under attack on the reg, it's nice to see a car like this right now.

Kudos to GM for building a machine. And for having the president of the company do some of the top speed runs.

I can promise the guy that is in the same position at Boeing isn’t taking the concept jets out for test flights.

This. I am in love with the LT6 engine they put in the C8 Z06 and ZR1.

I’m glad that GM announced last year that they’ve been working on a next generation V8 engine for their trucks and SUVs. They are going to sell millions of them although I am sure the complexity and price will be increasing.

Thankfully Ford is hanging on to their Coyote engine too.

Totally disagree. I would be much safer with the ability to go just about anywhere in my 4x4 Toyota Tacoma!
A Vette would have trouble parking at an LSU football game let alone the ability to "skedaddle out of dodge when the grid goes down."

The Corvette has always been the best bang for the buck in performance.

Don't forget the warranty. There isnt much comparison for value to performance.
