Coronavirus pandemic may lead to 75,000 "deaths of despair" from suicide, drug and alcohol

COVID-19 has directly claimed tens of thousands of U.S. lives, but conditions stemming from the novel coronavirus — rampant unemployment, isolation and an uncertain future — could lead to 75,000 deaths from drug or alcohol abuse and suicide, new research suggests.
Deaths from these causes are known as "deaths of despair." And the COVID-19 pandemic may be accelerating conditions that lead to such deaths.
"Deaths of despair are tied to multiple factors, like unemployment, fear and dread, and isolation. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were already an unprecedented number of deaths of despair. We wanted to estimate how this pandemic would change that number moving forward," said one of the study's authors, Benjamin Miller. He's chief strategy officer for the Well Being Trust in Oakland, Calif

I might be one of them. Not from despair, just from there not being much to do other than drinking and streaming.

I think that estimate is low.

only if they test positive for it.
or if they test positive for antibodies
or if they had cough in last 2 years
or if they exposed to someone that might have had it
or if they went to a store in a state that had a positive test for covid19

I can imagine. I've got two roommates I'm relatively close to and even with that and the ability to video chat friends and family, there's just something about this that makes you feel alone. Can't be easy at all for those who live alone.

I won't lie, my life is still afloat but the dread of the general climate is enough to give anyone some amount of depression.

A certain gentleman of an autumn hue was heavily critiqued for saying this

Also with all the casinos closed down and no sports to bet on what are gambling addicts doing right now?

This is a really sad part of this whole thing. The fact that some were basically thrown together day after day in such short notice that are used to being working all day and then come home is staggering. Most are not used to this kind of culture shock. And with the STILL unknown things about what’s next can be very depressing to some.... I know some that already live alone and used work as their social outreach but now they don’t even have that..... it’s a very sad time in the country.......

As states open up and people see that you don’t melt or catch aids from going outside, pressure will mount on the hold out states

It’s probably why there is so much pressure from the left to not open up at all until after.....let’s say November.

I live alone and working from home has been pretty darn isolating. It’s bad when even me and cat are getting on each other’s nerves. I could only imagine if I had a roommate, I’d want to kill him/her.
I’m a part of the recovery community up here in Monroe and it has taken a toll on people. I girl I’m close with is still living in a sober living house with 6 roommates and it sounds like a living hell.
Imagine 6 newly sober females all quarantined, and she has to work from home with her PC set up I. The living room due to house rules.
frick that.

Epidemiologists also predict an extra 120,000 cancer deaths and an extra 100,000 cardiovascular deaths due to a lack of screening and fear of visiting doctors.
We are trading 100 000 extra coronavirus deaths for 300,000 other deaths and the wrecking of our economy. We have to protect your 90 year old Grandma, by sacrificing your wife to breast cancer.

My grandchildren lift my spirits when I get "cabin fever". I'm over 60 and I haven't been around them in 2 months, but I can see/talk with them on discord. My son is a hospice nurse and my DIL works ICU. Not an ideal situation % wise for us to visit.
They are scamming me. They show up in princess dresses and tell me all about their day, except for the 2 year old boy who is always seen eating Doritos and terrorizing his sisters.
I seem to have got off topic.
They are scamming me because they have figured out if they send me a scribbled crayon masterpiece in the mail, Hubgrub or similar delivery services will show up soon.
What do you want? Tacos, Pizza, Chicken nuggets? Grandpa is sending it to you. Yaaa. I feel better, but I worry about my son that has been on call for sixty hours and works fifty.
