Thus far it seems highly contagious but its fatality rate is low. If it gets to something like SARS level (~11%) with that level of contagiousness (something like every contaminated person is giving it to ~2.6 people), that would be devastating.
Wuhan has just over 11 million people, at the SARS level that would be over a million dead in Wuhan alone. That's a mind-numbing number.

This is why I'm really not too worried about it. If I am not mistaken, it's less fatal that the flu. It's only killing the very old, very young, and otherwise already compromised people. It sucks, but it's not like this is the plague. It's a bigger deal than "much ado about nothing", but doesn't warrant the insanity its getting.

Looks like for the most part it’ll be deadly for people with preexisting conditions or those that have chronic respiratory issues, especially older people.
I wonder if the staff got it before they had a good idea of its infection rate or after they had really known about it and took proper measures.

It is at 4 percent which is still significant. We aren't talking about some long drawn out process like cancer. At this point there are astronomically higher chances that you are gonna die in Wuhan from this virus than cancer in the next 10 years if you are 50 years old.

Laboratory confirmed cases do not mean all cases. Current estimates is that reported numbers are only ~5% of overall infected.
So change that 2.83% to something closer to 0.15%

You can't count non-labratory cases because if they dead and haven't been to the doctor they wouldn't have been counted. They aren't gonna be doing autopsies from people that died and haven't been accounted for as having the virus. All we can go by is what they tell us.

That is the unknown. It’s possible the fatality rate is in line with the flu. The problem I don’t see much reason to trust the CCP numbers on number of cases and number of deaths. One could be off or both could be.
The 5% number was a ballpark guess from a Harvard study last week. I wouldn’t take that as gospel.
China is used to the flu, so it seems odd for the CCP to react like they have to something that is basically the flu.

Ever heard of self selecting bias? This is a fricking cold on steroids. Nothing more. Most who become infected won’t show anything but mild symptoms much less anything worthy of medical treatment.
So to recap: we will go in hysterics because of how widely it’s spreading, the CCP is lying to us, and immediately accept twitter estimates of 100k infected.
But to inflate the mortality rate, will pretend none of that is happening.

And that’s fair. But even if the number is 20%, it’s still a fraction of the number he is putting out.
The point is he is throwing out an absurd number without bothering to even consider the big picture. We don’t know a lot, but the mortality rate is indisputably less than what he is saying.
For instance, we know now that the mortality rate if hospitalized is around 15%. For his number to be true, one out of every 5 people infected would require hospital admission.
And we know that’s not true.
