Its making a bunch of assumptions. Seems like data presented to support a biased opinion

Current trend line has cases going up 10 fold every two weeks. Thats subject to change of course as social distancing factors in, though when that changes no one knows.

but what’s a reasonable threshold for herd immunity

I believe herd immunity is roughly 70% of the population.

Selfish to ask others to stay inside if they are able to? I’m not asking anyone to quit their jobs but I do think quarantines should happen.

Can anyone explain why the orange and green lines spike at the end of the year?

Have to go back and read the paper. They model a bunch of scenarios and, without a vaccine, virus cases increase once mitigation efforts are relaxed. However, a rebound in cases doesn't necessarily mean a rebound in deaths, as treatments could be more advanced by that point.

So that rebound timeline — am I to even think that we’ll be in this “self quarantine” mode for almost 18 months?? Like perhaps no school — no going back to college — no church — no weddings??

Please please tell me I’m totally making that up.

We have never acted like this about anything in our lifetimes. That is what should make people be aware. There is nothing saying we would act like this again.
I blame Facebook.

No, seriously.

Politicians react to panic, and the immediate spread of information (much of it misinformation) creates panic. And the media doesn't help.

You don't think people will act this way again? Toilet paper, man. It doesn't make any damned sense!

Everyone obviously believes this to be a legit threat or most of the other countries wouldn’t have locked down also.
There is political pressure in every country.

I'm not saying we should just shrug this off. Every contagious disease warrants some concern, and everyone should be mindful of how their actions might spread disease or how they might contract something themselves.

It pisses me off when I'm around someone and they casually say some shite like "I was puking all night". Well what the frick are you doing here? People in general seem to have no fricking clue how illness spreads. If you are sick or have been sick, stay the hell away from people. Wash your damned hands.

If I can smell someone's breath, good or bad, I back up. That's just a daily thing, how I live my life even when there's not a virus going around. It's 2020, why don't people know this stuff? I know you can be contagious before you even know you're sick, but shite, just be mindful at the times you know you're sick, and things won't get so out of hand.

But I guess we have to shut the world down to stop dumb people from doing dumb things?

You really think the rest of the world is as selfish as you?

I don't know what the right thing to do in this situation is. I'm sure there's a balance that much smarter people could come up with.

But in the context of this website and its views on personal responsibility, it's quite the shock to see all these people bending the knee to this virus. This site comprises some of the most selfish personalities I've ever come across.

We are going much further than that. Everything is shutting down. We are eliminating most reasons people might have to leave the house rather than asking.
quote:

I’m not asking anyone to quit their jobs
No one is being asked to quit. We are creating a situation where low earners will require government support, and small businesses will struggle to remain in business. Larger companies will get by, but when they fire back up they will be leaner (ie. require fewer employees). There won't be jobs to quit.

Sure these predictions could be way off, but would you bet against it? Will the government swoop in with a stimulus package? What will be the long term costs of that?

Is any of this necessary? No one knows, and that's frustrating to some of us.

Yeah me too. It's just preemptive quarantines seem a bit extreme.
