When that goes viral which I’m assuming now, people are going to think the worst case scenario which I assume is martial law. I think they are just doing it as a precautionary measure. But hey I thought this was the flu on steroids but I guess it’s the Black Plague or Spanish influenza. I don’t know shite.

See the post below your question of why.
I don’t want to be locked into my house.
(I don’t really think that would happen FYI)

Our organization already told us not to travel or if we did don’t come to office for 14 days. Didn’t want us traveling for any reason really. They also didn’t want us in office if close family travelled.
They obviously couldn’t ban it but they made it known we shouldn’t do it.

We do for now. We cancelled all elective cases system wide and all doctors appts. There is considerable concern for supplies. We are counting all masks in every dept to come up with an inventory. Face shields are gone. Neither will be available anytime soon. Its a fluid situation but contingencies are being floated that are mind numbing. We are full at 114% capacity with Icu pts boarding for multiple days in ED.

Not to travel outside of the country or state or anywhere?

San Jose is in bad shape right now. Not Italy bad but they are at their limits.

Damn. How many icu beds do you guys have? Are any patients showing signs of improvement?
Posted on 3/13/20 at 11:12 pm to tiger91
42 ICU beds. Our confirmed cases are not. We have a high number of febrile/respiratory/flu negative pts that can't be tested.
Posted on 3/13/20 at 11:14 pm to jennBN
Can’t be tested because no kits or don’t meet criteria? And damn that’s a big icu. Is that all icu combined?

Are hospitals required to give the update to reporters? CDC I’m sure they have to. But maybe cdc doesn’t give exact area?

The criteria keeps changing. Even if we want to test them at a private lab the CDC still has to confirm them and the local HD has to qualify them for CDC confirmation. It is an amazing amount of red tape. Then they want ID to be the source of all test ordering which makes it a multi MD/consult situation. Its so onerous I think they are just accepting defeat and admitting anyone sick enough to need hospitalization and sending everyone else back home? Who can keep a pt for 16-24 hours in the ED just to get permission to test? But what do I know. I am just a nurse.

Just to be clear that was the number of tests on one day, not total cases on the ship, and some of those asymptomatic cases may have developed symptoms later.
Seems like good and bad news. Good that there are so many asymptomatic/mild, but bad that those cases can still pass CV19 to people who are at higher risk and not know it.
There is a Japanese pre-print paper (not peer-reviewed) that attempted to estimate the asymptomatic percentage of cases based on their Diamond Princess passengers.
quote:
Figure 1 illustrates the flow of the evacuation process. By 6 February 2020 a total of N=565 citizens were evacuated. Among them, pN=63 (11.2%) were considered symptomatic upon arrival based on (1) temperature screening before disembarkation, and (2) face-to-face interviews eliciting information on symptoms including fever, cough, and other non-specific symptoms consistent with COVID-19. All passengers additionally undertook reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing, and m=5 asymptomatic and n=7 symptomatic passengers tested positive for 2019-nCoV.
quote:
The asymptomatic ratio is thus estimated at 41.6% (95% confidence interval (CI): 16.7%, 66.7%) among evacuees. Because fourteen days have elapsed since their departure from Wuhan—longer than the 95th percentile estimate of the COVID-19 incubation period (Li et al., 2020; Linton et al., 2020)—there is very little probability that the five virus-positive asymptomatic individuals will develop symptoms. Should one of the five becomes symptomatic in the future, the overall symptomatic ratio would decrease to 33.3% (95% CI: 8.3%, 58.3%).

It's pretty light but, hey, it's something to keep in mind.

What a goddamn shite show. This is embarrassing is what it is. We’re embarrassing ourselves on the world stage

Because they are still holding it together. We haven't reached the tipping point. The people working are watching the swell though. We don't have people dying waiting to get in...we are just moving the puzzle pieces around trying to make it all fit. San Jose is a hot spot and the thought here is they are a few days ahead of us. Things really ramped up there Monday...
Edit: Also hospitals are private enterprises, they are under no obligation to report to the public or the media any events happening within.

I'm strongly hoping that the two bouts we hd with a coronavirus last year offer some sort of immunity.
But I feel like it won't work like that.
I'll say this. You cannot be closer to death than I was in november and survive without the benefit of IV fluids and O2.
It is the only time in my life where I ever legitimately feared I might not make it
And I still didn't go until a week later when I felt better
