This correspondent from the BBC was probably the best source of independent news from Wuhan and Hubei province:

Stephen McDonell

Unfortunately, he was recently kicked out of Hubei for interviewing a hospital patient.

Also, this remarkable video is of a nearly empty flight from Shanghai to Beijing during one of the busiest travel periods:

We're at the point where more than 1.4 billion people are essentially on lockdown. This is just mind-blowing.

Just so we’re all on the same page with these, they’re blocking roads to keep people from leaving to try to contain the virus?

Basically, it's self-preservation.

Despite the nationalistic bluster from Xi Jinping, China is actually quite tribalistic when it comes to different regions. Many people who live in Beijing and Shanghai have a very low opinion of people who live in other parts of the country. I imagine most of the road blockages and public transportation shutdowns are due to the self-important mentality of city and provincial leaders who think the following: 1) the great "unwashed" in rural areas deserve blame for the crisis and 2) who cares if thousands of other people die, as long as I can keep the coronavirus from spreading rapidly in my own neighborhood.

Beijing's leaders, in particular, care more about keeping the coronavirus out of their homes than they do about the welfare of the rest of the country. If they start to feel threatened, some of them will be the first ones to break the travel ban and flee the country.

Email from one of my suppliers right outside of Wuhan.

Propaganda in full mode

Dear MrLarson

Many thanks for your kindly wishes, me and all my family are fine.

It's in emergency here in wuhan, same as our our aluminum factory xianning city. but all of us are staying at home, no gathering, no visiting relatives to help our gov. to avoid more infection. It is a special spring festivals this year, but our Chinese govenment is working efficient to handle the case, more and more medical team went to wuhan to handle the problem. We're sure it will recover and turn to normal soon.

Appreciated again for your concern. :)

Not surprised a case was confirmed in Orange County. The Chinese have bought up entire neighborhoods (and have been a big driver behind rising housing costs). If it gets to the homeless population, it will spread exponentially.
I also wasn’t surprised about France. Based on travel experience, I expect to hear about cases in Italy very soon- most likely Venice and Florence first. The Chinese mob these places in groups, year round. Spain too, but to a lesser extent. They typically travel as a group and book hotels with buffet breakfast, so yeah. I think Africa may get fairly pummeled but they have summer working for them on a lot of the continent.

At what point will we see any change in day to day activities in the US? 100 confirmed cases? Depends on location(s)?

Maybe if China wasn’t a filthy shite hole these things wouldn’t always originate from there. Research showing it started in their open air butcher markets and likely derived from bats

The cats already out of the bag... the roadblocks will do little to contain the virus.

200k fled Wuhan the day before the ban went in place.

China’s health minister Dr. Ma Xiaowei had some very bad news Sunday about the Wuhan coronavirus: He said people can spread it before they have symptoms.

A veteran adviser for a US health agency called the news a "game changer."

“When I heard this, I thought, ‘oh dear, this is worse than we anticipated.’ It means the infection is much more contagious than we originally thought,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a longtime adviser to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Schaffner added that this new piece of information called into question the current US practices for containing the virus so it doesn’t spread beyond the three cases that have already appeared in Washington state, California, and Illinois.

“Assuming that Dr. Ma is correct, we’re going to have to re-evaluate our strategy, that’s for sure,” said Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

I get the reference. The folks in Vegas seemed to be more fun to hang out with but I guess I would have to throw in with mother Abigail and her bunch in Colorado. I wouldn't mind a twirl or two with Nadine though

Thinking of stealing my boy's sailboat in the marina in new Orleans and heading for an island in the Caribbean.

Let me know how your Stand works out though.
