You act like a novel virus Has never existed until this one. As if it something super special that we have to freak out over. Over the last 300 years dozens of these have existed and only one, the Spanish flu, killed more than 2 million people WORLD WIDE.
So stop with the hysterics and fear mongering.

What happens if the coronavirus infects someone with flu? Could this create a superbug?

This is dumb. We've created vaccines for most and have decades-long immunities built up by this point. This is a NOVEL virus strain, aka NEW. If the common flu viruses were new starting this December we'd be doing the same.
If you could go back and limit social gatherings for a few weeks and close some businesses and schools to eradicate the flu before it becomes an annual epidemic, you absolutely do that.
What we're doing now could potentially be stopping another epidemic in it's tracks that would only ADD ON to the already deadly flu season that keeps hospitals busy enough. That's worth the slight inconvenience you face from not being able to watch sports on TV for a few weeks or go to a St. Patrick's day parade.
Why does this continually have to be explained to the same 2-3 dense posters over and over? shite.
If during the winter, you cancelled all social gatherings and school, would you not agree it would lower flu deaths and hospitalizations? Would it not lower viral pneumonia deaths and hospitalizations? Simple question

1st case in Alaska! Was a foreign national travelling through the airport in Anchorage. Although state is saying it was very isolated so they dont think there will be an outbreak here from it!

Coronavirus is a common noun. COVID-19 is a proper noun, boss.

You're not absorbing mine - or anyone else's - point.
It's too late to stop the flu, it's not too late to stop this. It's early enough and few enough cases that it's actually within reach of managing and eventually eradicating with the right measures.

Try closer to 50 million

It's too late to stop the flu
But why wouldn’t we cancel silly things like basketball games, music festivals, and parades to help lower the death total and hospitalization rate?

potentially

It’s pretty common for schools to close when the flu breaks out
My daughters school closed for 3 days this year due to the flu

I do think that this thing is more deadly than the flu. While both low overall this one can overwhelm our systems. We don’t want to ration care

But why, as a nation, don’t we take the approach starting every November to cancel silly sports, parades, and concerts etc?

because, as you have been told numerous times already, we have vaccines for the flu, the mortality rate is far lower, and we have the capacity to handle sick patients
It’s a silly point you are trying to make and you have been trying to make it for days now

It’s not a silly point
I am proving y’all are all too afraid to simply say you are willing to accept the current death rate of the annual flu. You are willing to accept the current measures we are taking to keep the rate where it’s at

Something I still can’t wrap my head around is how Italy has an outbreak of this size but there was no other hotspot in mainland China.
How does the providence next door from Hubei not get crushed too? There has to be 100x more travel between Hubei and the next providence than Hubei and Italy.
Are we going with China is lying? That would be pretty thought to cover up. People like Honkus are communicating with family there.

quote:look man. People die. The flu is brutal. But we have shown an ability to keep the death rate low and care for the most fragile. This thing could produce many more critical, medically complex patients. And if it means you don’t go to the CWS so some people don’t get told that they aren’t valuable enough to use limited resources on, then I am ok.
Ok. So you, like me, are ok with not taking those extra steps to lower the amount of deaths
The two things can’t be looked at as you continually, repeatedly, incessantly do.
