Supposedly the vaccine will take in excess of a year or more (maybe much more), so part of this whole mitigation is trying to keep the transmission rate slow enough that the medical system can get by in the mean time.
Although, we’re probably about 23 infected politicians away from this being accelerated the likes of which we’ve never seen....

It’s already being accelerated thanks to the hype.

I think that there will be a vaccine too. The are people working on a number of completely different approaches to a vaccine. But yeah, nothing will actually be available for at least a year.

That's dedication to keep up your shtick.

I read not long ago that they were close to a SARS vaccine, but never finished it because SARS went away. Would be interesting to know how much closer we might be had they finished that development instead of (seemingly) assuming there was no value in the research for a dwindling threat.
Also heard a couple of days ago that we will soon have a “universal flu vaccine” that doesn’t rely on guessing the two most likely strains of seasonal flu. That sounds promising.

I keep hearing this, but they are already testing the vaccine on clinical trials. Why a whole year?

They are just getting to the time consuming part. First they have to prove safety. You need time for any negative side effects to show. Think about how some drug companies have been sued for symptoms or side effects that don’t occur until years down the road. Then they have to prove that the vaccine is effective.
For the swine flu you already had proven safety and efficacy of other flu vaccines. So they just needed to rearrange the H’s and N’s to match the new virus.

Joe Rogan had an infectious disease expert on his show today.
His comments about airborne transmission and definite known asymptomatic spread is not good news. Maybe some of the resident doctors and science geeks can weigh in.

Im no one to look up to. Don’t be impressed by me. Be impressed by wawawewaawe who is on the front lines and has a family to worry about exposing. Yet he’s here every day in this thread posting as much as me and since this started. Maybe thousands of posts. How he finds the time I’ll never know. He’s the true hero.

Another case in Houston... And like all the others, returned from an overseas trip to you guessed it, Italy.
Seriously, what in the ever living frick. When will the US begin restricting and screening people coming in from Italy?

I will say this. There is no way he is a doctor like he says. Yes, we frick around on here all day
There is ZERO chance a doctor could do that while at work. My wife barely has time to shoot out a text at work

I text with my brother who is at Sloan Kettering throughout the day every day. Doctors can post here too.

All of the other cases in Houston are linked to a trip to Egypt.

If asymptomatic and airborne spread were much of a concern, with the long incubation period, I have a hard time seeing how this wouldn’t have spread much further, much faster than it currently has.
In particular you’d see it spreading more on planes, with rows of people being infected unknowingly. I haven’t seen where that has happened yet. You’d also see a rash of flight attendants getting it.
