So why SQL and Terradata? I've been looking hard at Tableau or PowerBI. Still can't find any real good datasets for this BTW.

Corona is enveloped, that means its lifespan is shorter outside a host.

I would estimate about 3.5 hours.

We don’t have a single confirmed case in PA but out of nowhere 5 schools were closed today due to some people in the district coming into contact with someone who has it.

Update: PA now has 2 confirmed cases. One in the NE corner and one in the SE corner. Both seem to be travel related.

Apparently one person from out of state who has it attended a gathering where there were school staff and children, which is what resulted in the 5 schools being closed today.

Correct. I added that just to put the article into context as it talks about both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses.

I think we could throw numbers out all day, but even for well known viruses, there isn't a ton of data available. As the article explains, just because the virus can be identified on a surface, doesn't mean it is still capable of infecting someone.

Well that is Oregon and they are a clusterfrick of a state.

Texas will have this thing rolling shortly. Dallas and Tarrant county will each be able to test 100 a day and grow from there.

Texas would be a cluster frick too if it had hit us first. Nobody in this country has prepared for shite.

I don't think that is known, but I found this article that does a nice job of explaining the general subject of viruses "survival" on surfaces in layman's terms.

SARS-CoV-2 is an enveloped virus.

Very cool article.

So 24 hours is basically the answer for how long it is transmittable from a surface.

Is that a more complicated question than it sounds? Can’t they swab the virus onto different surfaces and wait to test?

Volvagia is probably the most knowledgeable here on this topic. IMO it probably varies greatly with external factors like humidity, temperature, surface type.

In addition, being a novel virus, not anyone can just get a sample of the virus and start testing it. There would be insanely strict protocols and only certain labs would be able to do those tests. I don’t think it’s a high enough priority right now to devote the resources to it.

The numbers in Italy still concern me. (These #s are from yesterday I believe so they may be higher today)

quote:

@AndyBiotech · 14h #COVID19 Italy no signs of slow down
- Total cases +25%: 3089 - 3858
- Death toll +38%: 107 - 148
- ICU +19%: 295 - 351
- Hospitalized +33%: 1346 - 1790

10% of medical workers can't work because they are sick = LINK

The health care system is showing signs of being overwhelmed in Northern Italy. Beds are apparently starting to run out and the government is considering bringing doctors/nurses out of retirement and moving the graduation dates of new health care workers up to help. This should be the biggest worry for everyone. Even if the death rate is low situations like this where there is not enough staff and resources will cause that to grow.

Nearly 10% in ICU =

Thank you for these PA updates. I appreciate it.

That is true as a generalization, but while it’s too early to have done solid studies on this virus, it’s cousins (SARS, MERS, and endemic coronaviruses) who are also enveloped have no problem remaining infectious for days in cases on some inanimate surfaces.

Interesting paper; thanks for posting.

Can clarify if this is talking about the virus remaining infectious for that amount of time or is just able to be identified? Those times seem quite long to me.

I’d be shocked if most colleges in the US don’t do the same. My university cancelled a week for Dorian and Georgia wasn’t even effected by Dorian, ain’t no way they’re going to continue face to face classes when this thing gets down here.

The Italy outbreak is insane. The numbers there are really, really staggering from being so far from the central outbreak, and it being EU with essentially open borders and easy rail, car, and flight access to the rest of Europe...

Very fricking concerning. I'm going to be in France in a couple of weeks and that does not look good at all.

Yeah, we've seen how the outbreaks occur so quickly locally and can overwhelm hospitals in an area. I can't think of something much worse for an outbreak than a student living in dorm housing with shared bathrooms getting sick and say attending a basketball game in a crowded student section in addition to their normal classes in a big auditorium.
