Great post
He is worried about the coronavirus mortality rates, which are skewed and still low, while not realizing his grandparents beat the over 50% chance they should already be dead
Yeah its so weird to be worried about your elderly grandparents getting sick and dying from a highly contagious novel virus with a high mortality rate.

Just letting you know them getting the flu, falling, getting strep, possible shingles, fissures, etc etc are also very bad at that age
So, if you want to worry, you should worry about those things hard too
I find it interesting humans only usually worry about new novel things. Anything that has killed us for 1000s of years seems meh

I’m trying to sort through the data like everyone else. My current opinion is that this is deadlier than the flu but not as bad as the numbers we are currently seeing. On top of that there are a lot of factors that could change the overall effect of the virus in a good way.... mutation, weather, new antivirals, and potential vaccines. I just find it dangerous that some people think this is just the flu. Those people are the ones that will make the epidemic worse than it has to be if they don’t take it seriously.
If that is fear mongering I don’t know what to tell you

Do you think its a cowinkydink the country who has done exponentially more testing, also happened to be the country with a mortality rate far lower than anyone? A mortality rate at about 0.4-0.6%?
It could be. The data is all over the map. Italy is a first world country that has done a ton of testing. As I said before they could have variables that are making that number higher. But it’s just a guess at this point.
It’s wiser to proceed with caution until we know more

Same as this should be treated

So yes, slightly deadlier than the flu. Her words not mine, the fact it seems every bit as contagious and dormant as a common cold, but lower resp instead of upper makes this slightly more deadly. That was her dumbing it down for a numbers nerd like myself
If you arent trying to fear monger, I apologize. It just seems that way reading through some posts

Italy is a first world country that has done a ton of testing.
I would not consider that comparable samples IMHO

Actually it is, considering you did not even care about all these other options

Bro, all we are doing in this thread is discussing updates, news and the like and 99 percent are real time numbers with links. Just because someone posts an update doesn't mean they are fear mongering or panicking. It's ok to participate in this thread without being labeled as that. That's all anyone is trying to tell you. We don't think we are gonna drop dead from this thing and we have no idea if we will even get sick at all. Still, it's a cool, informative thread and you are shitting on participants for no good reason. You are just wrong bro. Now downvote me and tell me I think I am gonna die.

Usually, its numbers posted followed by "Its not looking good"
"lol at the idiots who thought this wasnt something to fear"
The numbers seem to be posted to support an opinion about the subject. Just how I see it

The way you treat the flu and the way the average American treats the flu may be completely different. You know that. How many people get flu shots? It’s free, takes 2 seconds, and can reduce your risk of dying from the flu. Yet millions of people refuse to get it. Because “it’s just the flu”

The mortality rate associated with COVID-19 may be "considerably less than 1%," instead of the 2% reported by some groups, write Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and colleagues in an editorial published February 28 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Would be great if true. I would like to see the data she is using to determine that number.

I never said they were comparable. I just said Italy has done a lot of testing.
I personally think the upper limit of mortality is probably around 1% with a well functioning health system. I base this on the diamond princess because it accounts for any asymptomatic carriers since everyone was tested. I say upper limit because the passengers were generally older so it would more closely represent the rate for the older population in the the population. Every age bracket below that would be less than 1%.
That’s all just my opinion because some people freak out if you mention the cruise ship. I think it’s very valuable data.
