Any word on the Pope? Surely he has been tested after showing upper respiratory symptoms considering his proximity to patients.

I haven't seen anything since Friday when they said he had canceled his public appearances but was still taking private meetings.
Part of me wonders if they would even admit it publicly if he tested positive.

18 new deaths in Italy, I could be wrong but I think that is the largest single day death total there I believe.

So at what point are you (the people in this thread) going to start avoiding things?
Personally, I would not fly right now - domestic and especially international. Maybe that's overreacting but I hate flying to begin with and I'd guaranteed get stuck next to some nasty arse dude coughing his lungs up.
Has anyone already started avoiding crowds? I've always been anal in flu season about wiping everything down like grocery carts, tables, etc. A lot of that is because I have toddler that licks everything.
Just curious what the posters in this thread who are mostly* more informed on this than the general public are doing now.

Reserving judgement till the Italy/SK situation shakes out some more.
If you are in the risk factor group though, it’s likely you might want to start limiting outside interactions already, wash your hands before eating anything, and don’t touch your face.
If nothing else, it’s practice for when it’s needed.

Why the hell would you not already do this? This is basic hygiene.
ETA: Sorry, not meant to sound like an arse. It just amazes me at how many people see this as "optional".

Except it isn’t.
Also, there’s the “anything” part too.
Many wash their hands before dinner....but what about that snack?

I am using this as a push to make sure I practice good hygiene in public (not just for coronavirus, but other viruses/bacteria). I always wash my hands after using a public restroom, but I am keeping a small bottle of hand sanitizer in my backpack/truck and hitting it after leaving the restroom. Also using a paper towel to turn off sink faucet whenever possible. I also have a habit of resting my chin on my hand or holding my hand up to my chin/mouth area when working at a desk, so I am trying to make sure I don't do that, at least not until after I have washed my hands thoroughly.

It is amazing that people don't already practice this, particularly during cold/flu season. I started to count the number of times I washed my hands in a day once. I gave up. I'm not an OCD hand washer, but after any questionable contact I wash them first before I do anything. This time of year I go into a grocery store or other public place with the expectation that it is infested with the plague. Again, not to an OCD level, but I wash hands, use the hand sanitizer dispensers, and avoid direct contact with people as much as possible. I also limit eating out, particularly any sort of buffet, during cold/flu season.
It all may seem excessive, but it has become my SOP and I don't even notice it anymore.

Could be, but my suspicion is that they only have the ability to do a limited number of tests and they don’t want to be flooded with tests for patients that are ambulatory and delay tests for patients that are critical.
That too. Mine is more of a fringe benefit rather than a stated goal.

Yeah, I try to wash my hands whenever possible. However, I partially amputated a finger recently, so that's made hand washing difficult. I've been keeping hand sanitizer on my desk at work, in my car, downstairs at home and in my room at home. I've been using it all the time. If everybody simply washed their hands and used hand sanitizer, I'd be curious to know how much healthier our society would be. I'm even keeping wet wipes in my car to wipe my phone case off at the end of the day.

I’m probably closer to the “overly cautious” end of the spectrum than most in this thread, but today I have started working from home and am keeping my toddler out of daycare for the time being. There is no drop off in my work productivity and since my wife works from home anyways, between us we are able to get our work done and take care of/entertain our kid.
I had planned on going to a wine and beer tasting event this weekend, but haven’t bought my tickets yet. I will likely skip it now. That seems like just the thing to avoid at this time if you can.
When I go to the grocery store I’m wiping the cart down and washing my hands well as soon as I get home. I’ve also been wiping down my phone when I return home from being somewhere public.
Again, this is probably overly cautious, but if the above actions have minimal inconvenience to me they seem like reasonable steps to take while we wait to see how this starts shaking out. This could turn out to be a minimal community spread situation or we could just be looking at the tip of an iceberg. We should have a much better idea by end of next week.

I sort of wonder this to, especially since we are heading into the Easter season.

It’s still supper rare. Even if there are 5,000 Americans currently contagious, that would be like one person in the whole football stadium. On top of that chance of dying if your under 50 and heathy is about 1 in a thousand. Play the odds.

Unfortunately we live in a society containing members that think stuff like this is okay.
