My docs don’t have time for that. That is a piss poor plan. However, at least you have a plan. Radio silence here in California (for front line staff I can’t speak for MDs).

No one has time for that. It’s not a 5 minute phone call. Unless you are in the ICU with a critical patient that needs a diagnosis docs are just going to call it the flu and move on

This criteria is set up to find deaths and critical cases first and that’s exactly what we will see happen.

And I think the criteria is intended to stifle the case count so people don’t overreact from the sudden testing flooding.

The CDC really fricked this up

Their response could've been better and they tried to ramp up testing but there was the issue with test kits. For test the CDC has run on non repatriated csses, 450 negative results and 15 confirmed positive. New York said they have 1 positive, 8 negative, 1 pending. The US restricted travel from China significantly more than Europe and Europe is over 2,000 confirmed cases. Maybe the US travel restrictions helped slow the spread to the US. The major issue is now we are seeing confirmed exports from Italy, Iran, Egypt, etc. in other countries. Those will probably be showing up in the US this week.

Could be, but my suspicion is that they only have the ability to do a limited number of tests and they don’t want to be flooded with tests for patients that are ambulatory and delay tests for patients that are critical.

The tests were delayed because they wanted to create their own test when the rest of the world was already using effective tests. Then on top of that the tests were screwed up.

MILAN (AP) — The coronavirus outbreak in northern Italy has so overwhelmed the public health system that officials are taking extraordinary measures to care for the sick, seeking to bring doctors out of retirement and accelerate graduation dates for nursing students. The region of Lombardy has been the epicenter of Italy’s outbreak, registering the first positive test of the northern cluster and now counting 984 of Italy’s 1,694 cases. Most alarmingly, 10% of Lombardy’s doctors and nurses are out of commission, because they tested positive for the virus and are in quarantine, said the region’s top health official, Giulio Gallera.

It goes on to state they expect cases to keep rising for another week and hope that it starts slowing after that due to containment measures they implemented.

It remains unclear why CDC developed its own coronavirus test, rather than relying on one distributed by the World Health Organization, but some experts suggest the agency wanted a test that would do a better job of ruling out other viruses.

Use the test from the WHO (that everyone else is using) while you develop your more accurate test. Does that seem like the easiest solution or am I taking crazy pills?

Many of us have said this is the real threat. This is when the mortality jumps from the 0.5% range to over 2%

Which only makes sense as the media breathlessly reports each additional case.

It would be great if we could see a peak and decline in a country outside of China. I think until then the markets will continue to get hammered as no one knows if there is an end in sight.

The confirmed NYC case is a lady in the health care field that was in Iran. I suspect she knew she had it and traveled home and self quarantined.

Model predictions

quote:

Over 80% of coverage is required to end the epidemic in 6 months with population-wide vaccination. The epidemic could be ended in just under a year if testing with isolation and treatment reached 80% of symptomatically infected patients within 24 hours of symptom onset (assuming 10% asymptomatic transmission). The epidemic could be ended in six months if testing with isolation and treatment reached 90% of symptomatic patients. If 90% of symptomatic patients could be tested within six hours of symptoms appearing, the epidemic could be ended in under four months.

I hope the CDC is working on developing a point of care test. We need quick diagnosis so people can isolate and prevent the spread. Even if this means some level of false positives. Identifying cases in the hospital/ICU isn’t going to do a damn thing.
