So they are still allowing people to visit the nursing home.

They had a sign that said no visitors the other day when I saw this on the news.

WTF is going on there?

Realistically, I don't understand how they aren't getting more flak for this. They just brought this shite on the entire fricking world.

They are feeling it terribly now, in months we will all be in the same boat due to their actions though

CDC fricking this up so bad. Why are our tests so shitty?

Not just us, this has happened in every country this is going through, the fact is we don't understand this, period. That's why any suggestions as to it's not serious or the body count will be low is off base. Data sharing is unreliable at best due to where this all started and then spread to. We are just now going to begin to learn about it.

Outside of China and Iran, show me where its off base?

Outside of those two, the mortality is less than 2% and prob way sub 1% for those that are under 50 and semi healthy.

Here's one in Florida not officially confirmed yet:

NEW: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reports 2 cases of coronavirus, declares public health emergency

Welp, it's been nice knowing y'all.

I have a job where I'm faced with the public often, usually people from all over the country that have crossed multiple states (US Marshal). I'm also on planes and in airports often, but haven't been lately.

I've basically resigned myself to the fact that I'm gonna get it at some point. I'm not worried about the virus itself (I'm 32, I smoke a cigarette every so often but am in good health otherwise), I'm more worried about the public panicking and possibly spending 2 weeks in quarantine.

Followed this thread from the beginning though, chiming in now that I may have relevant happenings nearby or things to add with my FedGov position.

#BREAKING - The first novel #coronavirus case has been reported in New York. The patient is a woman in her late 30s who contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran. She is currently isolated in her home, according to state Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Still less than 100 confirmed cases in the US. As of last weekend, Italy was just emerging as an issue, Germany wasn't really an issue, Egypt was still way under reporting cases, but containment was already a pipe dream. Regardless of testing in the US, cases were coming in. The question now, what kind of mitigation efforts are we able to implement in this political environment?

Well apparently its been making the rounds in Washington for 6 weeks. The original case who traveled to china passed it along and so on, to where we are now with the deaths.

And blame the CDC for not requiring more stringent testing earlier.

Considering I keep seeing how confirmed cases are returning from travel in Italy, this is my feeling:
Youtube clip - NSFW language

But I did see this on Reddit:
quote:

The top virologist in Germany (partly responsible for sequencing the genome of the virus and heavily involved in many current research efforts) says that the purported CFR of 2-3% is definitely too high and not what they base their models and work on. He says that public entities (such as the German equivalent of the CDC) have to report rates and proportions based on the officially known numbers, but private researches like himself are able to 'clean' the data to get a much more realistic picture. In order to get a true idea of the CFR, they exclude all Chinese numbers (unreliable for multiple reasons, including that almost only those seeking medical care have been tested), as well as all Iranian and at least for now the Italian numbers (they are absolutely certain that in both these countries cases are vastly underreported, and the first infections inly surfaced after post-mortem examinations, when the first deaths happened, based on probably already hundreds if not thousands of cases). The much more realistic CFR is most certainly below 0.5%, he says. Source: Interviews on NDR Podcast

I believe it is referencing the following podcast as a source: German language podcast (sorry)

2nd bit of info:
quote:

In a similar vein, the team at the 'Seattle Flu Study' have sequenced the genome of the very recent (Feb 28) case in Washington State, and it turns out that it is genetically almost identical to that of a case from 6 weeks ago in the same county. They say that this particular variant is only present n 2/59 viruses from China, and they conclude that this "strongly suggests that there has been cryptic [i.e. undetected] transmission in Washington State for the past 6 weeks". They expect there to be at "a few hundred current infections" (though it could be in the thousands depending on the actual R0). The major implication here is that this has been possible because there is a large (and potentially huge) number of asymptomatic and/or mild cases - and this pattern could be extrapolated to not only China, but to all other countries as well (where, let's face it, very very little testing is being done, and almost always based on quite narrow criteria). We have been conducting many interviews to try to alleviate some of the panic we are sensing from the media.

Granted the coronavirus, COVID-19 is vicious. I went days feeling fine, contaminating everything I touched before my instantly rising fever gave me a clue, I was contagious. With six Diamond Princess passengers now dead, the virus is sobering. But my symptoms, along with our friends, Mark and Jerri Jorgensen are mild. Much less than a common cold.

Jerri Jorgensen and I experienced the rapidly rising high fever for a few hours. Mark did not. I still have a cough. Jerri and Mark never had one. I have been ranking my illness a “two” on a one-to-ten scale. If I wasn’t contagious, I would have been at work the next day.

I continue to recommend having a good thermometer to use as a comfort, making sure there is no fever spike, and not freaking out with each cough or sniffle.

Another reader enjoyed my Weird Al Yankovic request to convert the Knack’s hit, “My Sharona” to “My Corona.” She shared she owned a 1979 Toyota Corona. She and her friends sang, “My Corona,” as they were driving. I thought I had come up with an original idea. I was wrong.

Earlier in the day, I was interviewed on one of the news networks. Their anchor asked if there’s anything I miss while in quarantine. I said it’s a shame I’m in Omaha and I can’t experience a good Omaha steak.

The Simon family, owners of Omaha steaks heard my interview. Tonight’s dinner contained the best steak I’ve eaten. The Simons sent a card welcoming us to Omaha. “Even if you are quarantined, we believe you should be able to enjoy a classic steakhouse experience, so we are bringing it to you.” Steaks were delivered to all 15 of us in quarantine along with our medical staff. A very classy touch from Omaha Steaks.

Just read that the entire Washington mess all ties back to the original patient zero who went to China. If so, then its been spreading for 6 weeks virtually undetected.

It would be a terrible bio weapon if so. Somewhere around a 0.1% fatality rate for people under 50 who contract the disease.
