Geeze. We are skipping the containment phase and going straight to mitigation. Testing needs to increase dramatically to identify areas at risk or it’s going to get ugly quickly.

Not effective against Coronavirus, but they are effective against other illnesses.

I think that is what he is saying.

This misinformation is ridiculous. Basically he says they aren’t effective for the average Joe, but our docs need them because they apparently work for medical professionals.

It seems to me that they are also saying the N95 masks are effective if you put them on sick people to keep them from spreading it, but not effective if a healthy person puts it on to keep from getting it. That makes no sense, as it should work both ways if it is going to work one way.

Anyone else find it surprising that there is no community spread in Canada or England yet?

One of the confirmed coronavirus cases in Washington is a US Postal Service worker. Health officials are working quickly to identify close contacts of the six confirmed patients

Geez, why is it the people who work at schools or who deliver the mail that are getting it? It's like coronavirus knows which people are around the highest number of other people.

Or...or, they got it from someone who was asymptomatic/weak symptoms because they have so much contact with people

Oh Ye OT experts:

With the test kits available nationwide by the end of the week, do you expect a dramatic spike, or not?

Widespread panic to ensue with a possible truer number of cases in the country state by state, or do you say no?

I would expect a spike later on. It'll take time for the tests to get where they need to go and be administered widespread. Then it takes a couple days for results to come in. With the different localities and govts and politics they will all have different reporting standards. It'll be a clusterfrick and there won't be a complete picture til later on.

I am pretty sure they need the masks for people in the hospital who are infected. The surgical masks are only good for slowing the infection from people who are already sick.

Also I would imagine the masks are needed for every day issues.

If that is what he meant, then he needs to seriously work on his communication skills bc that is not at all what the quote said.

But as far as we know, a properly fitted N95 or better IS effective.

Properly fitted, the N95 will protect a healthy person. What does NOT work are surgical masks. Those help sick people to reduce their “output”, but because they aren’t sealed around the edges, particulate can be breathed in by a healthy person wearing one.

This has to be balanced with hand washing, hand sanitizer, and other basic, common sense precautions like take stairways and not elevators (don’t use the handrails, tho). Less people take the stairs and you aren’t trapping yourself in 10-square-foot box with other folks and touching buttons/surfaces.

In my mind, anything is better than nothing. If I have the option of having a run of the mill mask in an effort to attempt to protect against droplets and nothing, I’ll take the something.

I really don’t think we will know until the final body count is tallied in a few months.

So who is buying "no cases" in Burma and Laos?

You can’t find something you aren’t looking for.

Just like North Korea. Smack dab in the middle of the two largest outbreaks but they have no cases.

North Korea doesn't exactly have a lot of travel and trade with South Korea. Obviously more with China but the "Hermit Kingdom" not having an outbreak wouldn't actually be surprising.

Laos and Myanmar though? There's no way their number is zero.
