This happens in some cases for many viruses.

When you have hundreds of cases, there will be a few that are like this.

I believe the normal flu can be reoccurring in some patients.

I find it concerning that this patient started having symptoms again. When they first discussed “re-infection” I thought they were implying a patient testing positive later but without symptoms.

Who knows. It’s a Reuters article. That’s one doctors explanation.

I guess it depends on if you believe the China quarantines really worked.

What’s the alternative? Spread happens so fast that it overwhelms the hospital system and people start dying all over the place? In South Korea they are already almost maxed out on appropriate hospital beds

The WHO team on the ground in China is saying that the measures China deployed appear to have slowed the spread of the virus. However, they have also admitted that what China did probably can't be replicated around the world. China deployed measures that have been described as barbaric, medieval, etc.

Also, Hong Kong and Singapore still have relatively low case counts, esp. considering the amount of time since their 1st cases. It is still possible that those are examples of the norm and that Iran, Italy, portions of China are the outliers. Trying to predict natural phenomenon is typically a fools errand and there are people that get paid to do that, so I leave that to them. Worst case scenarios are tail end events but human history is littered with the 1/10,000 or 1/100,000 type events. Eventually another crippling pandemic will sweep the globe. Is this it? Maybe? Maybe not?

South Campus of UCD. Employees are serviced by KP Vacaville. Students report to NorthBay or a KP for the most part. Vallejo is there as well...not sure what the demographics there are but I would guess they have a few asian folks there as well. Why are you so angry?

Has it been discussed in this thread about Tokyo is pondering the idea of postponing the 2020 summer Olympics?

OK, I just heard someone on a reputable sports talk radio show mention it.
Didn't think they would actually cancel it or postpone it.

I appreciate your input, JennBN. Hope you let us know what you hear over the next couple of days from your part of California.

Caixin, a surprisingly independent news source in Beijing, just published some damning details about the Chinese government's actions in the initial days of Covid-19.

Apparently, some impressive researchers in Guangzhou already had the viral genome sequenced on December 27, and they sent the results to the Chinese CDC on January 1.

Then, from January 2-3, all of the research institutes that had samples of Covid-19 were told to destroy their samples and not leak information to the public.

Once you have the infection, it could remain dormant and with minimal symptoms, and then you can get an exacerbation if it finds its way into the lungs,” said Philip Tierno Jr., Professor of Microbiology and Pathology at NYU School of Medicine. He said much remains unknown about the virus. “I’m not certain that this is not bi-phasic, like anthrax,” he said, meaning the disease appears to go away before recurring.

This explanation sounds less like re-infection and more like a dormant phase in her case.

I'm not angry, you're here posting unknowns as they are facts and refuting the most common and likely scenario, when you admit yourself it's unknown.

China will have to close their borders to keep the virus out. This thing has officially jumped the shark.

If you’re able to work from home with minimal adverse impact on your job, should you do it? I’m in eastern PA. Long Island and Massachusetts aren’t super far away and they currently have hundreds of people in voluntary quarantine. It could easily spread far before we know what’s up.

A real doctor admits to having no clue but you have it all figured out.

You're the other end of the spectrum that you bitch about daily.

the patient was transferred to UC Davis from “another Northern California hospital” on Wednesday, Feb 19. “When the patient arrived, the patient had already been intubated, was on a ventilator, and given droplet protection orders because of an undiagnosed and suspected viral condition,” the email said. Upon admission, our team asked public health officials if this case could be COVID-19. We requested COVID-19 testing by the CDC, since neither Sacramento County nor (the California Department of Public Health) is doing testing for coronavirus at this time. Since the patient did not fit the existing CDC criteria for COVID-19, a test was not immediately administered,” said the email, which added that, “UC Davis Health does not control the testing process.” On Sunday, the CDC ordered COVID-19 testing of the patient and the patient was put on airborne precautions and strict contact precautions. The positive test results were announced on Wednesday.

Why the frick is Iran able to run tests but we are having to get the green light from the CDC? We should be doing more tests than anyone. This really pisses me off

I pointed this out two days ago when it was revealed the US had only done 426 tests up to that point, and got 14 down votes.

quote:

Of course we're missing signficant numbers of cases; it's a contagious disease and it's spreading around the globe. The US either has either chosen not to test to avoid a panic, or we don't have the ability.

And this two days ago, which got 9 downvotes.

quote:

Based on the fact that we've only tested 426 patients since this started, as of today. That means we have tested a handful of people who had exposure history and practically nobody else. ....This must be official CDC policy, since they control the testing as of now, but they might as well stop releasing case numbers because they have no meaningful data to show how many cases or deaths there are in the US......I hope they have a good handle on how contagious and virulent this virus is, because we're proceeding blindfolded.

And this 3 days ago

quote:

I've seen no indication that we're doing either random or regular testing of people with potentially matching signs and symptoms. As widely as this virus has spread around the world, cases with no known history of exposure are surely popping up in the US, not being tested or diagnosed or treated as anything other than normal seasonal respiratory illness.

And this 4 days ago

quote:

From what I've seen recently, the US appears to mainly be testing for Covid-19 when there's a history of known or suspected exposure to the virus. Maybe they exist, but I haven't seen any guidelines instructing physicians when to test for Covid-19 virus based on clinical signs and symptoms without history of exposure.

And this about 10 days ago, which is something that I have never witnessed any evidence to change my opinion, in any context.

quote:

It's not unreasonable to doubt official data from anywhere on the planet. The problems include complexity of collecting population data, cost, incompetence or indifference, and outright fudging. The more important the issue, the less chance of full and accurate disclosure to the public in a timely manner. Anyone who doubts that hasn't studied much history on any subject.

And if anyone believes that the "first" case of community transmission announced today is actually the first and only one out of 300+ million people, I have some stock I like to sell you at last Thursday's closing price.
