It's time for everyone's favorite part of the day - exponential regressions with slackster!
Best fit since 1/21 would suggest 9081 cases in tonight's update from mainland China. Average margin of error was 4.6%, max margin of error was 7.6%, so 8,663-9,499 if it misses by average and 8,391-9,771 if it misses by the max miss so far.
Alternatively, if you map best fit starting 1/16 to 1/22, and then add every new data point out of China since then and refit the line, the line is getting less and less "severe".
The black line is the trend through 1/22, the next green line is the trend through 1/23, blue through 1/24, red through 1/25, black (there is also a purple line very close to black) is through 1/26 and 1/27 (purple), and the last green line is through 1/28. The x-axis is days - day 13 is yesterday and day 1 is January 16th when China started issuing daily reports.
ETA - Red dots are the cumulative confirmed cases in China by day.

China's report(s) seem to be start being released at 6 PM CST which I think is 8 AM there.

It was mostly tongue in cheek because yesterday you had people posting not about news, but made up future news.
It’s irritating because even the legit news feeds are getting buried with it.

Unless there are another 1500 cases across China, that's a very promising number.
