My husband is a farmer with two employees. About two weeks ago, someone who had worked for him before showed up at the farm and asked him if he was hiring -- he had gotten laid off ONE HOUR BEFORE heading to our farm. He was a good worker so my husband happily hired him part time (they needed the extra help) and the guy got right into a rice bin to sweep it out (not an easy job). Two weeks later, the guy got a call that his offshore job is his again if he wants it BUT he's arranged with my husband to work one of his two off weeks between hitches.
Husband needed the help -- we were able to afford it (at least for now) so it was a win/win and he's a good worker!

My wife's boss is doing something similar. She's giving raises to her 2 employees before applying.
For the vast majority of businesses, the amount that you get depends on your 2019 payroll. There are exceptions for seasonal businesses and new businesses.

CD, does your company normally work a lot more in the summer? I think that might explain why this makes sense for your boss

My institution just okay'd allowing elective surgeries again starting next week. We have been basically shut off since the beginning of April from doing elective cases.
Based the on the daily emails I get, I think we had at most 12 positive Covid-19 in house at any given time with a handful on ventilators. That number is down to about 5 or so people now.

It’s coming. But it’s not a surprise anymore and it’s going to be much less impactful. No bars, no theaters, no schools, no sporting events, compromised kept isolated and people aware of the risks. It’s going to spike, but very unlikely to be anywhere close to this first wave.

If your company follows the minimum federal government overtime laws and less say you get paid $20 an hour, you’re looking at weekly paychecks of $2,120.
If you have the same pay but do what most of my former companies have done - you hit double pay when you hit 60 hours - you’re looking at $2,360 a week.
But yeah frick that nonexistent work life balance. I’d take 5 10s for the next 5 weeks and go back to normal after that.

Tempting. I am actually thinking about six twelve hour shifts and taking off on Sunday for church. I will at least go in at midnight Saturday and leave at 8am. Thanks for breaking down the money. I hadn't really done that. I just knew it would be a truck load of money.
It is kind of funny because before this he used to give all of us grief for working overtime. Now he wants us to work 90 hour weeks. I am gonna do my best to help out because it would be a tough 8 weeks but the money I could put in savings would be huge.

If it were long-term, I’d be looking around. But if there’s an expiration on that madness, as it seems there is, it really is a good short-term opportunity to pad your savings. I think that’s a no-brainer. But do take care of yourself, mentally as well. If it feels like it’s getting to be too much, step away for a day or so.

Update from nursing home where I work: 15 positives of 77 residents. So 19.5% infection rate. Still a few pending swabs.
One was sent to the hospital after being noncompliant with oxygen and sats dropping to the 80s and below and another was tested in our facility but sent to the hospital before testing came back (not exactly what happened for them to ship him out). I'm really worried about 4 of them dying -- 3 of those were NOT sick enough prior to this to make me think that they'd die from their long standing diagnoses any time soon.
A couple fortunately have been made DNR and a couple the family has opted for Hospice

We're 100 beds but 23 are short term/rehab and they've all been d/c now except the two who need to stay long term.

Couple of things we were tracking early on in this thread before things really took off in the US:
- South Korea had a nCFR below 0.5% at one point but they are now up to 2.2%
- Diamond Princess nCFR is now 1.8%
