Citizens in North Carolina are being threatened with fines and arrests if they protest the government, for protests are deemed “non-essential activity”.

Maybe the mitigation worked, maybe it was an overreaction

I fully believe that both sides have done a shitty thing by politicizing the virus, the preparations, response, treatment, etc. If anything bumps up against Covid, it’s going to be used by someone to score political points. I’m not casting no blame on anyone....hell....I work in national politics for a living and I’m guilty of it.
What scares me, and maybe I’m wrong here, is that we’ve slowly turned this into a partisan fight and it’s the last thing we need at the moment. I hope this light a lot of citizens, civic, state, and federal leaders are seeing at the end of the tunnel is real and not fool’s gold. The best way i can describe it is:
You know how you go into the doctor with a terrible sinus infection and step throat...you get a steroid shot, antibiotic Rx, the GOOD decongestant w/ meth building blocks......and if you’re lucky and have a long relationship with the Dr, some Tussionex cough syrup.
So after taking everything for 4 or 5 days you feel like new again, are back at work, doing social activities, etc. Since you feel fine, you may quit taking the antibiotics and find yourself sick again; possibly sicker. I was stupid when I was young and did that a couple of times. So, back to my original point:
Are we being that young stupid 20 something and “skipping” the rest of the meds because we’re feeling better? Will it bite us in the arse?

Yeah the mitigation worked so well we went from 2,000,000 deaths and 100,000,000 infections to 26,000 deaths and 600,000 cases.

Waiting for people to tell you what is there to say, but not putting the time to do more than skim the hyperbolic headlines.
Politicians and leaders used to the high end estimates on absolutely hyperbolic estimations in order to get the support of the people

Just looked up the age vs covid19 data for Italy. It is even more skewed toward older individuals than Louisiana's statistics are! 83.5% of Italian deaths are 70+ y/o.

Wait, so you are saying that the steps the government has taken to prevent the spread of this virus and save countless lives of our older citizens and citizens with preexisting conditions ripe for death if they catch it have been overblown and not necessary? Just trying to figure out how much weight your posts deserve. Thanks.

It's not an unreasonable question, except for the fact that in real life there's no such thing as a black or white answer. So, what are the longer term consequences of these "meds"? How dangerous is it to shut down an economy and let politicians and bureaucrats run wild with what would normally be considered authoritarian dictates? How dangerous is it to pile trillions more in debt on top of the trillions we already can't pay, which will eventually result in either outright or inflationary default?
Is printing money to pay the bills now considered a safe remedy for whatever ails our economy, like some people consider tylenol a safe remedy for their constant aches and pains? Or should we persistently remind people that Tylenol overdose is probably the most common cause of acute liver failure in this country, and that money overdose due to debt monetization (or as a substitute for direct taxation) has long been proven to kill the patient in the end? We're well into a ten plus year clinical trial of that deadly experiment and about to double down on the dose. I've studied that particular form of snake oil for a long time and my opinion is that the policy/fiscal/monetary medication we're being sold as a cure is now a significantly bigger threat than the virus itself.

I was told I was wrong, this was just about flattening a curve and keeping hospitals from being overrun
Well, I don’t see our govt slowing down anytime soon. The mayor of Nola is now talking about cancelling all events through the year and our governor is talking about keeping things locked down until a vaccine comes about

It's not like there was a vote.
We're just along for the ride. If this goes too far beyond the first of May, I would expect some civil unrest.
I'm not taking too much from the words of our mayors and governors who submit worst-case scenarios just so they can pat themselves on the back when it doesn't come to pass.

Yep.
Which unfortunately happens with viruses all the time.
Wife and I are trying to get pregnant at the moment and our OB said they're way more worried about the flu for their patients and babies if the mom isn't overweight or immuno compromised.

They don't have these powers. Everything they are doing is unconstitutional but the overwhelming majority of people in this country (and on this board) are perfectly willing to give up their rights voluntarily for a little bit of short term safety.
I find that both sad and scary. The precedent is set. North Carolina has shown us that precedent in an obvious way. Now all it will take is for one REAL emergency to end the whole thing.

I wouldn't say I gave up any rights. It was my company's decision to work from home and I thought it was best at the time. I think this is a little extreme. When JBE starts arresting us then I will say my rights are taken away.

If there's one thing that no one should be worried about for the next couple of years, it's the flu.
I expect there to be a tremendous push this fall for everyone to get the flu vaccine, because everyone who contracts the flu is someone who likely ends up needing a COVID-19 test and putting more stress on the system. If we can keep the flu at really low levels next winter, we won't have to deal with the "background noise" that it generates. It will mean lots more COVID-19 tests available for those who might actually have the disease.
